The mad dash to earn a spot in the Sprint All-Star Race began on Friday afternoon with qualifying for the Sprint Showdown.
Austin Dillon and A.J. Allmendinger earned the coveted spots in the front row for Friday night's race that will advance the top two racers, and the winner of a fan vote, to Saturday night's All-Star Race.
Allmendinger took the early lead with a time of 27.821 on his first lap, but his lead would not hold up until the end, as Dillon took over the top of the leaderboard with a first-lap time of 27.747.
Behind the top two sit Kyle Larson, Clint Bowyer and Marcos Ambrose, all of whom recorded lap times under 28 seconds under the sun at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Friday night's Sprint Showdown will last just 40 laps, and with high stakes on the line, it is a guarantee that Dillon and Allmendinger will have to fight hard with 21 other drivers for a coveted spot in the All-Star Race.
