As MMADieHards.com first reported yesterday...
Sources have confirmed that WEC officials are working quickly to set up a possible interim title bout.
The fight would feature top contenders Donald Cerrone and Benson Henderson, and would be held in September.
Cerrone had been awaiting the highly anticipated rematch with WEC Champ Jaime Varner.
Yesterday, Yahoo.com's Maggie Hendricks reported that Varner's injury would not allow him to fight.
MMADieHards.com contacted Varner, who told us, "The hand hasn't healed correctly."
When contacted yesterday on vacation in Colorado, Cerrone stated, "I wanted to fight him before, and I still want to fight him now, but I will fight whoever the WEC puts in front of me."
When asked who he thought could be a possible contender, Cerrone said, "Benson Henderson."
That appears to be accurate, as sources have confirmed to MMADieHards.com that Henderson will step in for Varner and fight Cerrone in September for the WEC Interim title.
The up-and-comer Benson Henderson has won his first two bouts in the WEC in impressive fashion over Anthony Njokuani and most recently Shane Roller.
