Liverpool play host to Newcastle United in their season finale, knowing that only a win will be enough to give them any chance of securing the Premier League title.

Even then, the Reds are relying on West Ham to overcome the challenge of Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, giving them a very slim window of hope to peer through.

Liverpool on Red Alert

It's at this stage of almost every Premier League season that mathematical possibilities become one of the most popular topics of discussion when the title race is concerned.

As things stand, Brendan Rodgers' men are two points off the Citizens, having lost their ace in the hole by losing to Chelsea and drawing at Crystal Palace.

Their necessity for a win on Sunday is made all the more intriguing when one considers that Newcastle are one of the 11 teams that Liverpool have already dropped points against this term, having drawn 2-2 at St. James' Park in October.

"Attack" will be the message that Rodgers sends to his troops on the front line, but even that isn't assured to bring them anything other than a fruitless high note upon which they can end the season.

The Reds' need for a win is likely to inspire a most entertaining affair. Silly though it may seem, the Reds might look to launch one final attempt in hounding down City's goal-difference advantage, currently 13 better off than their own.

The title is Liverpool's main aim, but they will have other targets. Currently on 99 goals, one behind City, the Reds will likely be keen to finish as the best attackers in the country.

An expansive and fluid Liverpool have been a joy to watch when at their best this season and, combined with the fact that more than two thirds of Newcastle's away fixtures this season have seen three goals or more, per Statto, neutrals are in for a treat.

Key Battle

Mamadou Sakho vs. Loic Remy

Newcastle have made it their business to develop a small niche in the French market over recent years, of which not all transfers have paid off, but the loan signing of Loic Remy has been a triumph for the club.

And after scoring one and setting up another against Cardiff City last weekend, the Magpies striker will have a stiffer test in the shape of international compatriot and fellow French international Mamadou Sakho.

Liverpool's purchase from last summer can be astute when he has time on the ball, but as Liverpool writer Paul Tomkins points out, it's his defensive lapses that cause doubt:

Remy will look to pounce on such nerves when he makes the trip to Anfield, and if Alan Pardew's men are to have any hopes of victory at the season's death, they must ensure the French frontman is supported in his crusade.
