Vontae Davis' Identity Stolen
This news is just getting out now, but it appears that Vontae Davis was mysteriously arrested in Champaign, Illinios while Davis was attending a Miami Dolphins OTA! Davis claims that he was in the process of the OTA, and that afterwards, he attended a rookie symposium until around 3:30 pm. There was really no possible way that Davis could have been anywhere near Illinios because, he was at the Dolphins facility at 7:00 am!
To back Davis up, Dolphins VP of media relations, Harvey Greene said "I talked to Vontae, and he told me he was here all day on June 9. It was an OTA day, followed by a rookie symposium that we know kept him in the building until at least 3:30 [p.m.]. There was no way he could have been in Illinois at 6:40 [p.m.] or whenever that happened."
So now, the case is not just Davis' word against the polices word, Davis actually has a legitimate alibi to back him up. Vontae said that while he was still in Illinois, that his wallet was stolen but he had all of his credit cards canceled, and that it would be the police's fault for not making sure that his license did not match the person in the car. He also added, "That's the only thing I can think of. But that shouldn't be able to work if the police know that person doesn't look like me."
Davis' agent, Todd France had even gotten into the mix. He stated ""It is my understanding that not only was Vontae Davis in South Florida all day on June 9, but also the team confirmed he was at OTA's that day and was there at 7 am the next morning for workouts. The team also confirmed that he attended a rookie life-skill session that ended at 3:30 p.m. on June 9 making it unfeasible for him to be in Illinois at the alleged 6:47 arrest time. This is not just 'Vontae's claim' but a fact and supported by the Miami Dolphins. It’s a shame to try and tarnish a person's name no matter how small or big the accusation is. Bottom line, we are looking further into it and will consider our legal options as far as the false report."
This "arrest" has really been blown out of proportion. Obviously if Davis says that his wallet was stolen from him, then this is a case of identity theft, and it is a shame that the police could not pay enough attention to who the driver was, and the picture on the drivers license. The head of the situation in the police department, Renne Dunn, said that she plans to talk to the Dolphins to try and clear things up, and resolve the situation.
Lets hope that this does get resolved, Davis has done nothing wrong so far in the league, and he already had suffered from rumors that he had a bad attitude, and fell in the draft because of it. I hope for the best for the kid.
