The Talladega Superspeedway has a reputation for exciting, high-octane races full of drama, crashes and a fair dose of the unexpected, and Sunday’s Aaron’s 499 of the Sprint Cup Series was no different.
Denny Hamlin captured the crash-filled race under a caution flag, securing his first career victory at Talladega and his first Sprint Cup Series win of the season.
Greg Biffle finished second, and Clint Bowyer was third.
The ending was a bit anticlimactic, as a collision involving Justin Allgaier left a large pile of debris right in front of the finish line, resulting in the caution flag. Since the white flag was already up for the final lap, the caution flag froze the field, securing the victory for Hamlin, his first in a restrictor-plates race.
As is par for the course at Talladega, there were several crashes, eight separate cautions, 48 lead changes and 23 different leaders in a field of 43 drivers.
