The NHL playoffs may be over, the world beard championships won't return until 2011 (worldbeardchampionships.com) but baseball players are picking up where they left off. Here is a list of the best beards in the bigs in 2009.
Nice mix of the long goatee with a normal length beard. It's all accentuated by the shaved head.
Another one highlighted by a bald head, Youk tends to let the goatee get longer throughout the season.
The Cardinals backup Catcher has been rocking a gnarley Fu Manchu all year. He does, of course, play in the city of Al Hrabosky.
Speaking of Gateway City beards, Cards relief pitchers are getting into the Bruce Sutter spirit. Jason Motte has rocked a blend between Reed Johnson (see # 1) and Eric Gange.
The other half of the Cards bullpen beards.
Redding has put on weight as he as gotten older making it hard to determine where his chins end and the beard begins. Either way, he'd make Anthrax's Scott Ian proud.
Apparently Wood is letting his goatee grow until he gets hurt again. This shouldn't last long.
Danny Haren goes back and forth from goatee to beard, but either way it looks like Leonardo Dicaprio in a France Prision in "Catch Me if You Can," but, you know, not as good looking.
The beard runner-up of the season so far.
Zavada is doing his best to make his mark on the MLB. The 'stache helps but if he keeps performing like this (1 R, 0 ER in 10 appearances) he could be a valuable lefty reliever.
Honorable mentions go to Roy Holliday (when he lets his beard grow out) Corey Hart (likewise) and Eric Brunlett. He may have shaved it off, but I had to get a picture of Rick Ankiel's killer 'stache in too.
