Taking a look at on-track advance wagering on Friday at Churchill Downs, as expected California Chrome is the early betting favorite for the 140th running of the Kentucky Derby at odds of 3-1.
With $202,807 in the win pool at the close of business on Friday, the Santa Anita Derby (G1) winner garnered $33,808 of the action. The colt is 5-2 on the morning line.
It is a small sample size, as millions more will be wagered on Saturday both on-track and throughout the country at other racetracks, off-track betting parlors and from horseplayers at home using online wagering accounts.
It is a close fight for second-choice honors between Danza and Wicked Strong, who are both listed at 8-1. Wicked Strong, the Wood Memorial (G1) winner has $8 more backing him than Danza, who comes into the Run for the Roses off an upset victory in the Arkansas Derby (G1) at Oaklawn Park.
Ride On Curlin, who was listed at 15-1 on the morning line and as high as 18-1 as of yesterday at Oddssshark.com, has seen some action, bet down to 12-1. The colt did not win any of his three Derby preps this year, but jockey Calvin Borel will be in the irons. Borel has booted home three of the last seven Derby winners and is very popular in Kentucky.
A field of 19 will head to the gate this afternoon after the scratches of Hoppertunity and Pablo Del Monte. Post time for the race is 6:24pm (ET) and will be broadcast live on NBC.
