Mountain biking is harder than it looks.
A spectator at the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup wrecked in horrifying fashion after attempting to ride down a particularly nasty segment at the Smithfield Mountain Bike Park in Cairns, Australia.
Pete Blackburn of NextImpulseSports.com spotted footage of the wreck, which occurred when a cycling fan attempted to ride an injured pro’s bike down to the end of the course.
According to Reddit commenter Skid_N_Steeze, the “bloke” in question hopped on the bike after pro rider Adam Brayton went down with an injury further up the course.
The pro rider, Adam Brayton, crashed further up the track fairly hard and couldn’t finish his run so this bloke volunteered to take his bike back to the pits. Instead of pushing back up the steep, stupidly muddy track he decided to ride it to the bottom...Most likely drunk (lke most other spectators this far into the day) and encouraged by the crowd, he tried to show off/ride fast…
Let's review this for a moment, shall we?
A random fan tried to bomb down this course after watching a pro rider injure himself badly enough to give up the ghost. I just want to make sure we’re all clear on the reasoning behind this stunt.
Even worse, the man went down the hill without helmet and wrecked what's likely a $15,000 (or more) piece of equipment.
The man's status has not yet been confirmed, but his fall looked concussive, to say the least. Hopefully he’s recovering somewhere with a new appreciation for safety and pro cyclists.
