Nick Castellanos' two-run homer gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead in the second. The Tigers scored seven runs in the third to knock out starter Kevin Correia and take a 9-1 lead. Working with a 10-1 lead, Rick Porcello exited after the Twins began the sixth by going homer-single-walk. Minnesota scored four runs in the inning to get within 10-5, then added an unearned run in the seventh to make it 10-6. That was the score going to the ninth.
