Arsenal Transfer News and Rumours: Week of April 14
It's been another busy week on the transfer rumour front as the season reaches its climax.
So who have the Gunners been linked with over the last week?
Read on to find out.
Toulouse Star Aurier Lined Up as Sagna Replacement
Toulouse right-back Serge Aurier has continued to attract attention, and suggestions of a move to Arsenal are getting stronger.
According to Tony Stenson of The Daily Star, Arsene Wenger has identified the 21-year-old as a possible replacement for Bacary Sagna, who is out of contract in June and yet to pen a new deal at the club.
Inside Futbol quote Ivory Coast international Aurier telling Foot Mercato that it would be a "dream" to play for the Gunners:
Arsenal, you can't refuse.
You can ask any player if he would play at Arsenal. I think he would respond positively without hesitation.
This is a legendary club and we all know the many French players who have played a part in the history of Arsenal.
Of course, it is a dream.
With Monaco, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea also looking at the promising defender, these words will be of significant encouragement to Wenger.
Italian Midfielder Verratti Linked with £17M Switch
The Gunners are expected to strengthen in several areas this summer, and another player identified as a possible addition is Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Marco Verratti.
The 21-year-old Italian has made over 50 appearances since joining the club from Pescara in 2012, but according to TuttoMercatoWeb.com (h/t Metro) the Gunners are preparing a £17 million bid, as they see him as an ideal replacement for Mikel Arteta.
Iranian Striker Azmoun Linked with Emirates Move
Two reports in last week’s Daily Star have revealed the Gunners are in talks with Russian club Rubin Kazan over the possible signing of Iranian striker Sardar Azmoun.
There already are solid offers coming from both Arsenal and AC Milan.
...I'm really happy for such clubs being interested in signing me, and playing in Premier League would be a dream coming true.
A fee of £2 million is expected to be enough to clinch his signature.
Van Gaal Keeps Options Open Amid Wenger Uncertainty
In-demand Louis van Gaal is believed to be keeping his options open amid rumours that Arsene Wenger may not be in charge of Arsenal next season.
The Netherlands coach, who has been heavily linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur after his time with the Dutch ends following this summer's World Cup, per BBC Sport, is believed to be waiting to see if Wenger commits his future to Arsenal before making a decision on his own future.
According to Steve Bates in the Mirror:
Job-hunting Louis van Gaal is waiting for Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger to commit his future to the Emirates before deciding on his own next move...
The Holland national side boss was in line to take over from Tim Sherwood at Tottenham in the summer. But Van Gaal is hedging his bets in case Wenger goes.
Old Trafford is another potential Premier League berth for Van Gaal – as revealed in People Sport – although Manchester United insist they are sticking with David Moyes.
Fabianski Could Be on the Move as Cazorla Courts Casillas
The transfer rumour mill has also focused on the goalkeeping position this week, with Lukasz Fabianski expected to leave the club. Iker Casillas has been identified as a possible replacement and viable contender with Wojciech Szczesny for the No. 1 jersey.
According to Germany’s Bild, via BBC Sport, Borussia Dortmund are interested in signing 28-year-old Fabianski, who was the Arsenal hero on Saturday, saving two penalties to send his side through to the FA Cup final.
According to Sport360's Nacho Labarga, Cazorla said:
I've told him [I would like him to join Arsenal], but so far he has just been curious about my experience in England.
His situation is very complicated, but he has to make a decision.
Lots of clubs want him, including Arsenal, but I think that it would be very difficult to leave Real Madrid because of what the club represents.
Campbell Linked with Newcastle Move
Newcastle United are believed to be keen on signing Arsenal striker Joel Campbell, who has impressed while on loan to Greek champions Olympiacos.
The 21-year-old striker showed his talent with a stunning goal against Manchester United in the last 16 of the Champions League, and the Costa Rican could now be set for a move back to the U.K.
Per Gary Jones of the Daily Star, Campbell and Tenerife forward Ayoze Perez have been identified as possible recruits: "That's according to new reports that claim the Magpies will focus on snapping up the Tenerife forward and the currently on-loan Gunners star to spearhead a new-look strikeforce for next season."
Arsenal Join the Hunt for Lyon Midfielder Gonalons
Another midfield target Arsenal have been linked with is Lyon’s Maxime Gonalons.
The 25-year-old anchorman has been on Arsene Wenger’s radar for several years now, and with the French giants facing financial issues, they could be ready to cash in.
Giroud Could Be Surplus to Requirements
In other news, the Charlie Wyett of The Sun (subscription required) reported that Olivier Giroud's future at the club could be over, as he does not feature in Wenger’s long-term plans.
Meanwhile, the same source (h/t ArsenalNews.co.uk) also suggests that they could renew their interest in AC Milan's M'Baye Niang, who is currently on loan at Montpellier.
Meanwhile, Adrian Kajumba of the Daily Star reported that Arsenal are keeping a close eye on Jay Rodriguez's recovery from knee surgery, following the 24-year-old Southampton forward’s impressive form that saw him propelled into the England squad.
