8 Insane Lionel Messi Stats No One Talks About

1 of 9

    Daniel Tejedor

Everyone knows about the ability of Lionel Messi. Even the most casual of football fans will be able to tell you how good a player he is, and how he can't fail to score goals.

Along with his astonishing strike rate, he seemingly sets new records every time he sets foot on the pitch.

The brilliant Argentine will no doubt continue to do so for the rest of his career—surpassing the achievements of those before him, legends of the game and some you've never heard of.

There are some statistics that we hear repeatedly and others that are rarely mentioned. This is a list detailing the latter.

8) Youngest Player to Score 200 Goals

He became the youngest player to score 200 league goals in Spain when Barcelona beat Osasuna 5-1 last January.

He was 25 years and 217 days old when he reached the feat, per USA Today.

7) Least Minutes Per League Goal in 2013/14

    Manu Fernandez

Prior to the away match with Granada, Messi had the least minutes per league goal for players who have scored 10 or more goals out of the top five leagues this season.

The Argentine nets a goal every 78 minutes, ahead of Sergio Aguero (80), Cristiano Ronaldo (85) and Luis Suarez (87), as per @BarcaStat.

6) Phenomenal Home Statistic in the Champions League

    Alvaro Barrientos

In recent times, Messi averages around a goal a game. This isn't represented in his overall statistics, like Cristiano Ronaldo at Real Madrid, due to him finding his feet in the early part of his career.

In Champions League matches at the Camp Nou, he has 37 goals in 39 matches, via MessiStats. When you consider that that includes games as a youngster, it's truly outstanding.

5) Messi Has Scored Against 100 Different Goalkeepers

The more matches and competitions you play in, the more likely you are to reach this milestone. However, it's not an easy one to ascertain—especially staying at one club.

Numerous clubs will keep the same goalkeeper, so you are relying on injuries and a variation in the opposition during European matches. Scoring past 100 different goalkeepers is a pretty amazing feat, via MessiStats.

4) Iker Casillas Has Conceded the Most Goals Against Messi

    Andres Kudacki

Players will often enjoy playing against some more than others. While that may not be the case here, rising to the big occasion is often what Messi does best.

Messi has scored 17 goals against Iker Casillas. Not only does that mean he scores more against Real Madrid than some of the poorer sides in La Liga, but Casillas has not been a regular for 18 months, via MessiStats.

3) 3rd Most Successful Penalty Taker in La Liga History

7 of 9

    Manu Fernandez

This isn't about the number of penalties scored, but the success rate of those taken from the spot.

Of the players who have taken at least 20 penalties, Messi is currently in 3rd place with 94% accuracy behind Hungarian Laszlo Kubala with 96% and Bernardino Perez Elizaran with 95%, via @MisterChiping.

2) Scored 20 Consecutive Penalties in La Liga

    Manu Fernandez

The current La Liga record for most-consecutive penalty conversions is held by Ronald Koeman. The Dutch defender was a dead-ball specialist and managed 25 in a row.

Against Real Betis, Messi scored his 20th in a row, but then missed a further spot kick to end his run. It's time to start again, as he looks to close Koeman down, via @MisterChiping.

1) Messi Ran Just 6.8 Kilometres During Atletico CL Quarter-Final 2nd Leg

This one is a little less satisfying than many of his others and was doing the rounds shortly after Wednesday night's match.

Messi ran a total of 6.8 kilometres during the Champions League quarter-final second leg against Atletico Madrid—just 1.5 km more than goalkeeper Jose Pinto. It wasn't his most productive game, but everyone is allowed an off day, via MessiStats.
