Rory McIlroy will once again bring a plus-one to the Masters' far more whimsical event, welcoming his fiancé, tennis star Caroline Wozniacki, to caddie for him during the Par-3 Contest.
Golf Channel's Ryan Lavner reports on the brief change on bag for McIlroy. The 24-year-old reportedly had this to say about having Wozniacki caddie last week during the Shell Houston Open: "Yeah, I will, for sure. She’s just worried that it might rain. If it’s raining, she’s not going to caddie."
As of this writing, it looks like Augusta (Ga.) should expect clouds and very little else, via Weather.com. So the 23-year-old should lay out the necessary attire and ready the bag for what should be a lighthearted affair on Wednesday.
As Lavner reminds, the tennis star should be accustomed to the event, serving as McIlroy's caddie to some praise in 2013.
If you can't wait until Wednesday to see how it all plays out, perhaps we might glean a little from last year's event, one that featured Wozniacki taking a rip on a ball and sending it dribbling into the drink:
We should have seen this all coming, because, as McIlroy offers in the video, his regular caddie might not be in danger of losing his job, save, "maybe for this day every year, yes."
Wozniacki continued, "I would say J.P. (Fitzgerald) should be nervous, but the thing is, Rory can’t afford me."
As we learned last year, Wozniacki didn't haul the clubs around the Par-3 Contest for nothing, because they did settle on compensation not exactly disclosed at the time. With a smile, Wozniacki offered, "I'm a good negotiator."
And she's a darn good caddie, because she is back on the bag this week.
Of course, the Par-3 is far more about having a great time than it is about results, which makes this pairing a fitting one that may just become an annual institution.
With a marriage coming, the two athletes who have braved rumors in the past are just busy enjoying the company of one another.
Thankfully, one of the biggest sporting events of the year offers a slice of whimsy to allow for what might be the best part of Wednesday.
McIlroy now has a Par-3 caddie for life, which means the chances are great that fans will get to see Wozniacki work on a golf swing that needs some fine tuning year after year.
Anyone working the cameras on Wednesday might want to get out of the way.
