When entering the trade, every rugby player knows that suffering a couple of bruises every now and then comes part and parcel with their chosen career.

This past week happened to be a particularly brutal one in Europe, where the Heineken Cup quarter-finals dazzled spectators not just in terms of top-quality rugby but also in the physical magnitude of those titanic tackles and catastrophic carries on display.

The headline of the weekend came from Ravenhill, where Ulster's Jared Payne found the Saracens' ire aimed in his direction for a mistimed, mid-air hit on full-back Alex Goode.

In France, Delon Armitage and Dave Kearney, of Toulon and Leinster respectively, had a similar clash vying for a high ball, and Mathieu Bastareaud was generous enough to offer up not just one but two Biggest Hit contributions this weekend.

We also have Western Force prop Pekahou Cowan flying a lonely-looking flag for the southern hemisphere, while Oyonnax put on a typically bruising blockbuster at home to Bordeaux.
