Just as one area of David Moyes' Manchester United squad is starting to return to full health, another has been hit by injuries.

The United manager revealed to the Manchester Evening News at his press conference on Friday that defenders Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans are nearing full fitness.

We have got Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling back in training. That helps us.

Ryan Giggs picked up a bit of an injury and we are not quite so worried about Alex Buttner.

We have got Jonny and Chris on the way back, which is important for us because we have missed them through what has arguably been one of the most difficult times of the season for us.

Evans, in particular, has been a loss to Moyes after missing the last 11 games with a calf injury. His last appearance was in the 2-1 defeat to Stoke City on February 1.

Moyes was forced to reunite Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic at centre-half against Bayern. Although both played well, it is likely that Evans will play some part against Newcastle ahead of the return leg with Bayern at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday.

Patrice Evra was left out of the squad that faced Aston Villa last weekend and was suspended for the draw with Bayern. He is also likely to return to the starting XI at St James' Park.

But just as his defenders are returning, Moyes' strikers are being struck down.

Robin van Persie has already been ruled out for six weeks with the knee injury suffered against Olympiacos. On Friday, Moyes told the Manchester Evening News Rooney is struggling with a toe injury that he picked up in the midweek draw with Bayern Munich.

He is likely to to miss the trip to Newcastle and is also a doubt for the return leg against Bayern next week. Danny Welbeck and Shinji Kagawa are both in line to start on Saturday.

It is a toe injury and they are never easy when you get one.

You could see him limping in the game towards the end quite badly.

There is not an awful lot you can do with a toe injury. Sometimes you can feel better quite quickly with them and sometimes you need an injection possibly to play with it if it is bruising.

With a lot of toe injuries you have to make sure there isn’t a hairline fracture or crack in your toe. We will have all that checked.

Juan Mata is available again after being cup-tied against Bayern.

Possible United team v Newcastle: De Gea, Smalling, Evra, Jones, Vidic, Carrick, Fletcher, Mata, Young, Kagawa, Welbeck.
