Manager Lou Piniella has already mention that when Alfonso Soriano comes back from the 15 day disabled list that he will indeed still be the lead off hitter. This to me seems to be the best approach because of just how good of player Alfonso Soriano is; he has an high OBP and he can steal bases as well as hit for average and drive in runs.
But is it enough for the fans they want to see Soriano hitting mega home runs and driving in a hundred or more RBIs? Soriano does not have to be the man to drive in 100+ RBIs that is why the Cubs have Lee and Ramirez to be the power in the lineup to hit the home runs and pick up the RBIs.
Soriano should be and will be fine at the lead off spot because he has the tendencies of a lead off hitter and has become very familiar with his role on the team. So if it is not broken do not fix it.
In some other notes Geovany Soto has struck out 8 times in a role, but was given the day off on Sunday. But he will be back at it on Tuesday and all eyes will be on him.
Did you know that the record for most strikeouts in a row in Cubs history is not by a hitter but by a pitcher named Bill Hands in 1968? The Cubs do not have any stats that show the record for consecutive strikeouts by a positional player.
Yesterday, on Saturday, Soto did the unthinkable of going 0-for-5 and striking out 5 straight times in the process. But all due respect to him as he is batting .316 which is third among rookies in the NL and with his 25 hits he is second, while his .415 OBP also ranks second among rookies. Plus his .544 slugging percentage ranks him also second.
Kosuke Fukudome among rookies ranks first in batting average .329 and first with 28 hits and in OBP .452 while ranking 4th with a .482 slugging percentage.
