Report: The Rock to Make an Appearance at WrestleMania XXX?

It looks like WWE fans are in for a special treat, with wrestling star-turned-actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson reportedly to make a cameo this Sunday at WrestleMania XXX.

Dave Meltzer, in this week's Wrestling Observer Newsletter (subscription required), notes that Johnson, as well as various other big names, has been contacted by management about making an appearance in New Orleans. With Johnson's notoriously busy schedule, however, fans may have to make do with a taped promo on the show rather than “The Great One” appearing in person:

It’s all hands on deck for WrestleMania in the sense that they’ve contacted every key person from Dwayne Johnson to Ric Flair to Steve Austin to Shawn Michaels to Roddy Piper to Jim Ross as far as the weekend goes. The impression I have is Johnson will be on the show in some form of a cameo, but whether it’s live or taped I’m not sure. Those in WWE have said Johnson will be on the show in some form. But they do want everyone at that level there live.

While it would be a pleasant surprise for people to see Johnson appear in any capacity, you'd have to wonder why the company wouldn't go out of its way to advertise him if it was sure he's going to be there.

A brief five-minute cameo isn't going to send WrestleMania XXX buyrates through the roof or anything like that, but it certainly couldn't hurt. You might even garner a bit more mainstream press—which WWE covets—out of the whole thing.

As for the other names mentioned: It will be fun to see the likes of Flair and Austin mix things up with current superstars, as it usually is.

(Fascinating and mildly frightening thought: Could Flair be a special participant in the 30-man Andre the Giant Battle Royale? Well, stranger things have happened.)

The potential participation of much-loved announcer Jim Ross is also welcome news.

Who knows? If Vince McMahon is feeling particularly generous we could see the Hall of Famer come out to commentate one of the high-profile matches on the night, like he has in other years. Ross crooning about new WWE World Heavyweight champion Daniel Bryan as the show goes off the air would be a nice and deeply heartwarming moment, wouldn't it?
