It seems that Paul Mainieri's Tiger baseball team can not be stopped in Omaha. The LSU Tigers have one game to win until they have put themselves in the College World Series Championship.
For the 2009 season, Blake Dean and company are batting .317 as a team, and holding their opponents to a .256 batting average. On the defensive side of things the Tiger pitchers have a total earned run average of 3.96, which is the reason they are in Omaha today. The biggest statistic the LSU players can brag about is how they have outscored their opponents 542 to 299.
One main reason the bayou bengal baseball team is one game away from the championship series is their success on defense. LSU has turned 33 double plays this season, and forced their opponents to strand 476 men on base. One bad note is that the Tiger defense has committed 66 errors to date, the most by freshman infielder Tyler Hanover with 13.
Another reason why LSU has such a strong team is because of their lively fan base. The new Alex Box Stadium in Baton Rouge has welcomed over 400,000 fans throughout this season. That is an average of just over 9,500 in attendance for the home games.
LSU is 2-0 in Omaha for the 2009 baseball season, and has to face either Arkansas or Virgina on Friday afternoon. If the Tigers win Friday at 1, they will be in the Championship Series. Seventeen out of nineteen teams that have started the College World Series out 2-0 have gone on the win the championship. The LSU Tigers now fall in that category.
Though the odds look good for Paul Mainieri's young men, they are not going to take things lightly. The Tigers will try their hardest throughout the series, and look like the team to beat this year. They are riding on a twelve game winning streak going into Friday's contest.
The game Friday against Arkansas or Virginia is scheduled for 1:00 P.M. Central time, and is going to be televised on ESPN2. In the Baton Rouge area fans can hear the radio broadcast on Eagle 98.1 FM. For a full list of LSU Sports Radio Network Affiliates visit www.LSUsports.net/radioaffiliates.
