The 6th pick in the draft, Vernon Gholston, will be a bust! I have many concerns with Gholston being drafted so highly.
Is it just me or did Gholston all of a sudden just pop up on every body's draft board one week? Working for Mike and Mike in the Morning, I see these lists every single day, I can clearly remember when he was mentioned and I thought to myself, WHO? Gholston came out of the woodwork, he came out of nowhere. Why? How?
The biggest achievement that Gholston had at Ohio State was apparently getting A sack against Michigan's Jake Long. This is ONE sack, right? Jake Long is great, but he is considered to be a mauler, not a finesse guy. Just because he gave up one sack against Gholston does not mean that Gholston is now the next chosen one!
Granted Gholston clearly took advantage of a big stage when playing against Michigan and Wisconsin, where was he during the other games? Outside of his 4 best games, he recorded only 3 sacks in 9 games. He played for a team that is televised and covered around the country, yet he was rarely ever talked about.
On the other hand, someone who was consistently talked about every week and played for a significantly less significant program was Virginia's Chris Long. If you ever watched a Virginia game it was clear who the best player on the field was at all times. Chris Long was everywhere, he was making plays or affecting the play every snap, that is what a player at this position is supposed to be doing.
When you watched the Buckeyes last year you never watched to watch Gholston, mainly because you didn't know who he was, and if you did watch to see him, you probably couldn't find him! Think about the best pass rushers at the next level, Strahan, Umenyiora, Kerney, and Jared Allen. These played are all over your screen, you know where they are at all times.
The fact that the main concern with Gholston is that he "disappears" at times, is a huge knock. If Gholston is a impact pass rusher who intends to play in a 3-4 defensive scheme with the Jets he will have to be a factor every single play, like a fellow buckeye, Mike Vrabel. Vernon Gholston keeps the Jets draft woes on track.

Agreed. Jets made a mistake by basing their pick soley on his stats at the combine. If a player doesn't produce during his college career why would anyone think he will make it in the NFL?

I truly agree w/ both of you. But in two or three years he'll be a stand out among that bunch. But truly over rated. But if your a jets fan your probly elated.

Just so you know--Gholston's sack was the only one given up by Long all season which is why it was such a big deal. As a Jets fan, I'm a little skeptical of the pick, but he could fill in nicely in the spot John Abraham used to occupy. The "disappearing" factor is a big problem, but it can be fixed by Mangini, the rest of the coaching staff, and the rest of the Jets team. We'll just have to wait and see.

But why did the jets not get mcfadden? He's truly going to be a acomplished runner. I REALY THANK JETS MADE TERRIBLE MISTAKE. Wish bucs had him.

Did you even watch the draft? McFadden was picked at the #4 spot.

That's kind of my question. But anyway... Gholston makes a lot of sense.
He's a huge risk/reward pick- look at his measureables, they're off the charts. He's a potential superstar with that kind of raw athletic ability. That athletic ability got him a sack against the best LT in the country. But also look at how he "disappears" ...that's potentially a recipe for disaster.
Personally, I think McFadden will be the biggest bust of the draft- Reggie Bush, take 2. But Gholston might not be very far behind if his football awareness doesn't improve.

Gholston destroyed Jake Long, who he'll get to see twice a year. Not a bad pick. The combine is overrated, but he shows up on film as well. They just need to get him out of the habit of taking plays (and sometimes games) off.

Sean, the "habit" of taking plays/games off, not a habit, its called being lazy, its someting that is VERY tough to fix. Maybe it can be done. A habit is usually something technical, such as taking a false step, something along those lines. These things are easy to fix, but you can rarely fix a players willingness to play 100% a 100% of the time

Yes, but he also stepped up his game against the best competition. The fact that he'll be playing the best competition week in and week out in the NFL might play to his strength.
At the sixth pick, he was the only elite player left on the board. I don't see how you can be upset with this pick. I would have gladly taken him in New England.

Well i guess only time will tell, I am not saying he is going to be bad as much as I am saying he is extremely over-rated, and not worthy of a 6th overall pick. Therefore for where he was drafted he will be a bust. When you say he will be playing the best of the best at the next level..will that be true when he is facing the worst teams in the NFL? There are still bottom feeders at the next level..I hope that makes sense. Basically no matter what level you are at there are always poor teams to "take it easy" against. So who says he wont do the same against those teams and players at the next level? and...not sure why my last comment posted twice.

"Is it just me or did Gholston all of a sudden just pop up on every body's draft board one week?"
It's just you. Anyone that is even a casual college football fan knew who he was.
"The biggest achievement that Gholston had at Ohio State was apparently getting A sack against Michigan's Jake Long."
That's an inaccurate statement. But since we've already demonstrated that you don't follow college football very closely, it's understandable that you'd make an inaccurate statement.
"He played for a team that is televised and covered around the country, yet he was rarely ever talked about."
He was talked about a lot by people that follow the game - and we've already concluded that you don't follow it very closely, so it's understandable that you'd make such a foolish statement.
"On the other hand, someone who was consistently talked about every week and played for a significantly less significant program was Virginia's Chris Long. If you ever watched a Virginia game it was clear who the best player on the field was at all times. Chris Long was everywhere, he was making plays or affecting the play every snap, that is what a player at this position is supposed to be doing."
...and Chris Long was selected ahead of Vernon Gholston. So what's your beef?
"When you watched the Buckeyes last year you never watched to watch Gholston, mainly because you didn't know who he was"
No...YOU didn't know who he was, because as we've already demonstrated, you don't follow the game very closely. And nobody watched the Buckeyes because of one individual player because they've got a LOT of first round picks on their team. It's impossible for just one to stand out when there are so many amazing players on the team. That's one reason why Chris Long stood out, because he was the only good player on a bad team.
"Think about the best pass rushers at the next level, Strahan, Umenyiora, Kerney, and Jared Allen. These played are all over your screen, you know where they are at all times."
..and none of them were considered "elite" pass rushers coming out of college. If "nobody" had ever heard of Vernon Gholston prior to the NFL Draft, imagine what sort of idiotic statements you would have written about these guys back before they got drafted.
