Reds-Giants: Cincinnati Holds On for Win in San Francisco
Coming into the night on a three-game slide, the Reds really needed to pick up a win here for morale reasons if nothing else.
For a team that is expected to put up good if not great numbers offensively, the Reds are ranked 23rd in MLB in runs scored and 13th in the NL.
Friday, pitcher Aaron Harang pitched a gem of a game and was once again rewarded by poor run support. Thankfully, Matt Belisle did not have to worry about that with the Reds' bats coming alive tonight.
The Reds put up 10 runs on 15 hits and won the game 10-9. The score can be a bit deceiving though as the reds were up 10-5 going into the bottom of the 9th before the Giants were able to mount a rally.
P Todd Coffey started the 9th by giving up back-to-back doubles and a walk before Manager Dusty Baker opted to bring in P Francisco Cordero. It took a couple batters for Cordero to get settled in it seemed. Cordero gave up a triple to 2B Eugenio Velez which plated two and then OF Randy Winn grounded out to score Velez. Cordero went on to retire the next two batters to pick up his third save of the season.
The Reds get to face P Barry Zito (0-5) tomorrow. Zito is off to a rough start in '08 which is causing everyone within baseball to question if he was really worth the $121 million contract the Giants gave him last year.
The thing that worries me with the Reds facing Zito is he is a left-handed pitcher which has been the Reds’ Achilles heel all of last year and early this year. They will need to get to him early and get back into that bullpen the Reds’ bats tore apart last night.
