Even though its early in the season, I think it is perfectly sane of me to see the Mariners already 4 games out of the division lead currently held by 2 different teams. One or two more weeks of good baseball and I'm going to start to think that the A's are going to defy everybody's preseason thoughts of a team that going to be laying low while building for the future. It seems like my whole life Oakland has been a team to get off to slow starts only to jump ahead as the season progresses. However, we have asserted at least a small amount of dominiance over Oakland this year and last night could have a had a much different result to it if Beltre's ground ball could have found its way through the hole.
Justin Duchsherer, in all of his excessive last name lettering glory while rocking a very Barry Zito reminiscent #58 jersey, has only had one start this year against Cleveland, which was even longer ago than Bedard's last start. Both are coincidentally returning from injuries.
Last Night
Oakland 4
Seattle 3
WP: Dana Eveland (3-1)
LP: Miguel Batista (2-3)
Save: Huston Street (7)
Player of the game:
This one is tough. Jose Lopez had four hits, which is more then the entire A's team, but he was on the losing side. I guess I'll give it to the homegrown Dana Eveland who pitched alright, good enough to not blow Oakland's early lead.
Turning Point:
3 runs given up in the first inning by Miguel Batista, who had to leave with a groin strain. All Oakland needed to do was tap on 1 more run and they were set.
Bright Spot:
After night after night of horrible relief pitching, the hearts of every Mariner fan sunk after seeing that last night was going to feature 8 innings of it. Baek came in in the second and went 6 innings of one hit one run baseball. Mark Lowe followed that up with just about 2 perfect innings. All of these innings were important as Seattle never fell out of the game.
Notes:
After an 0-2 night, the recently re-signed Kenji Johjima falls to .192. He is signed through 2011.
Miguel Batista became the fourth Mariner pitcher to get injured. The groin strain was mild and will be reevaluated Monday. The last thing the Mariners need is 3 starting pitchers with nagging injuries throughout the season.
The A's snapped a 6 game losing streak to the Mariners.
