With help from their run to the national championship game last season, the Michigan Wolverines have covered the spread in seven of their last nine NCAA tournament outings.

Big Blue backers hope that trend continues when the Wolverines take on the Wofford Terriers in Midwest Region action on Thursday.

Wofford gets 16 points to work with from oddsmakers and they have been profit machines when getting points lately. They have also won outright twice in the past three times in this underdog role.

Spread and total points scored betting line

The Wolverines opened as 14-point favorites but were sitting at -16 late Wednesday. The total was bet up to 129.5 from an open of 125.5 (Compare lines and consensus on the Odds Shark matchup report).

Why pick Wofford to cover the spread

The No. 15 Terriers finished third in the Southern Conference this season, then won their conference tournament to earn their third NCAA berth in the last five seasons. Wofford is young and small, but tough and smart. They also play good defense, holding foes to just 62 points per game.

Also, the Terriers covered the spread earlier this season at +17 against Saint Louis and +18 against VCU. Finally, Wofford beat expectations in its two recent NCAA Tournament games, covering at +10 against Wisconsin in 2010 and at +9 against BYU in 2011.

Why pick Michigan to cover the spread

Coach John Beilein's troops made the Final Four last year, then won the Big Ten's regular-season title this season before losing to Michigan State in the conference tournament championship game.

The Wolverines went 8-4 through a solid nonconference schedule, then went 15-3 to win the conference. No. 2 Michigan has weathered the loss of C Mitch McGary nicely, going 19-4 without him and the Wolverines are 7-2 ATS this season as double-digit favorites.

Smart betting pick

Michigan is favored big in this one and should escape this contest without much trouble. Athletically, the Wolverines will be too much for the Terriers to handle.

And Big Blue has been a moneymaker as big chalk this season, covering lines of -15, -22, -27, -16, -16, -10 and -13. Give the points and go with Michigan.
