The first 20 fixtures of the 2014 Indian Premier League will take place between April 16-30, organisers have confirmed.

This year's competition will open with a phase set primarily in the United Arab Emirates, as Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Dubai get ready to host vital fixtures across a jam-packed schedule, including five double-headers, per ESPNcricinfo:

The schedule was chalked out to allow each of the eight franchises to play at least once in all three cities, and also feature in at least one of the double-header weekends. Abu Dhabi and Dubai will host seven matches each while six games will be played in Sharjah.

Defending champions Mumbai Indians begin their bid to retain the crown with a difficult clash against Kolkata Knight Riders. New acquisition Michael Hussey will be amongst the squad that aims to stifle the 2012 winners in an Abu Dhabi clash that should kick the tournament off with a bang.

Kevin Pietersen's Delhi Daredevils career begins against Royal Challengers Bangalore, the team he represented between 2009-10. The newly installed captain, per Chris Stocks of The Guardian, is excited to get started:

This year's schedule begins with an extended run in the UAE to stop the action clashing with Indian elections, as reported by BBC Sport.

A handful of second-stage matches are likely to be held in Bangladesh and the tournament will return to India after May 13, when the polling stage is over. No match will be played on May 16, the day elections results are expected to be announced, in fear of political clashes halting the action.

This is a similar situation to the 2009 league, which was hosted in South Africa for the same reasons, per BBC News.

The Indian Premier League remains a star-studded, ultra-competitive competition that is sure to thrill across the coming months. With international stars such as Hussey and Pietersen heading into battle, the cricketing world should be treated to some high quality contests.

While Hussey knows what it feels like to capture the renowned prize, Pietersen's previous international commitments halted his influence over the Bangalore side which reached the 2009 final. He also failed to make an appearance when he signed for Deccan Chargers in 2011.

The recently dropped England international has a major point to prove to doubters across the globe, something he can instantly start to combat with a memorable performance against his old Royal Challengers side during this season's second game on April 17.
