Quick first half analysis:

UNITED:

de Gea—Could do nothing about the goal and has saved other shots with ease.

Rafael—Lucky not to be off for two yellows, but also United's best attacking outlet down the right flank.

Jones—Being given the run-around by Sturridge's movement off the ball and a little off the pace.

Vidic—Made a number of big interceptions and has been good in the air.

Evra—Ineffective so far going forward, but has stood up well to two-vs-one situations defensively.

Fellaini—Using his strength well at times but outnumbered in the centre.

Carrick—Hasn't been on the ball enough.

Januzaj—Looks better on the right and cutting in to attack.

Mata—Has had a few moments to shine but largely on the periphery.

Rooney—United's hardest-working player, trying to create space and chances. Had their best chance.

van Persie—Quiet except for a couple of half-chances on the turn.

LIVERPOOL:

Mignolet—One very good save from Rooney.

Johnson—Had a good half, in both directions.

Skrtel—Fantastic block near the end of the first half and has been commanding so far.

Agger—A couple of important interceptions but has also lost van Persie a couple of times.

Flanagan—Solid defensively but needs to be careful after an early yellow card.

Gerrard—Well-struck penalty and bossing midfield, but also on a booking.

Henderson—Very mature performance, using space in the middle well and passing quickly.

Allen—Has been a good option to get the Reds' passes started, might have done better in the box once.

Sterling—Finding space but needs to be quicker in possession.

Suarez—A real livewire, won one penalty and could have had another.

Sturridge—Playing well, linking play and has had two decent chances.

Quick second half analysis:

UNITED:

de Gea—One of the few to emerge with credit—a wonder save from Suarez near the end.

Rafael—No idea how he stayed on the pitch for the full 90 but actually made a number of good runs forward and defensive challenges.

Jones—Way out of his depth. Never got close to either of the front two, conceded a penalty and was all over the place.

Vidic—Actually defended well for the most part but received his customary red card vs. Liverpool all the same.

Evra—Played better in the second half when United had the ball, but didn't stop much going the other way.

Fellaini—A poor second half from the midfielder, who created little and lost possession often.

Carrick—Could have been subbed over Fellaini in truth; didn't dictate play and struggled when at the back. Overrun.

Mata—Didn't get on the ball enough to dictate the game.

Januzaj—Was United's most potent and regular attacking threat. Bemusing why he was subbed.

Rooney—Worked hard, made angles, looked to play in team-mates. Nothing quite came off.

van Persie—Slow to react and low on confidence. Not enough movement.

LIVERPOOL:

Mignolet—Made one very good save and claimed the ball in the air well, but a comfortable afternoon.

Johnson—Aside from being slow in possession at times going forward, he played well down the right.

Skrtel—Commanding, marked his attackers well and broke up play.

Agger—Improved defensively after the break. Made a few vital interceptions.

Flanagan—Ran a tightrope for a second yellow but made a lot of big challenges. Really good performance.

Gerrard—Excellent defensively again, broke up United's play and led the counters. Scored two and missed one penalty, so he'll be gutted.

Henderson—Quietly very effective. Didn't get into United's box much but supported Liverpool's attack very well.

Allen—Had a very good game. Used the ball well, supported Flanagan and won the second spot kick.

Sterling—On and off, he had good moments and helped out a lot defensively, but a little lacking in decision making on the ball.

Sturridge—Couldn't find a goal but was always a threat and linked up well with the midfielders.

Suarez—Sharp around the box, gave Phil Jones nightmares and took his goal well.
