It took every second of a nail-biting finish, but Ohio State outlasted Purdue by a 63-61 margin in the first round of the Big Ten tournament. LaQuinton Ross had 19 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Buckeyes.
Ohio State shot just 1-of-14 from long range, but it also forced 17 turnovers on the day. Aaron Craft had three steals in that total, along with four more from Lenzelle Smith Jr. Craft also scored 16 points and handed out five assists.
A.J. Hammons was brilliant in defeat, finishing with 15 points, nine rebounds and five blocks. The Johnson brothers combined for 22 points, but senior Terone missed a potential game-winning trey at the buzzer.
Purdue's season is likely done with a record of 15-16. Ohio State moves on to face Nebraska in the next round.
