The NFL free-agent market is heating up, with teams wasting little time in locking up some of the marquee names. Others, though, will have to wait as the dust clears.
Teams could begin speaking with potential free agents last Saturday, so there has been a steady stream of rumors over the past few days regarding players and their new potential teams. Josh McCown and Matt Schaub are two such players.
Here's the latest on where they might end up heading into the 2014 season.
The writing has been on the wall for some time with Josh McCown. He's never going to be the guy in Chicago, and the only way he'd be the Bears' starter is if Jay Cutler went down with another injury. If he wants to make the most of his final productive years under center, McCown would have to go elsewhere.
Given his success in Chicago last year, the 34-year-old will have some options this offseason.
Vic Tafur of the San Francisco Chronicle reported that the Oakland Raiders may throw their name in the hat, but McCown's likeliest destination is either the Tampa Bay Buccaneers or the New York Jets:
NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported that McCown is visiting the Bucs before heading off to Houston to meet with the Texans:
There are a lot of question marks as to how McCown will perform outside of a Marc Trestman-coached offense, but nobody will ask him to be his 2013 self.
At least in New York and Tampa, he'd be more of a security blanket for younger QBs who need to step up rather than the nailed-on starter.
This is too good to be true. A franchise that's been through re-tread quarterback after re-tread quarterback could potentially sign somebody who threw a pick-six in four straight games last season.
Because why not?
The Plain Dealer's Mary Kay Cabot reported the Cleveland Browns are pursuing a possible deal with Matt Schaub:
At the time of writing, Schaub has yet to be released from the Houston Texans. John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reported that the team hasn't officially cut ties with the quarterback but confirmed that it will be visiting with McCown:
The Texans cutting Schaub seems imminent. He was dreadful last season, and Houston will likely draft a new QB in May, in addition to possibly McCown coming in.
Rapoport reported that the New York Jets could also be interested in Schaub, which would be just as perfect:
Might Jets fans long for the days of having only one (Mark Sanchez) mediocre quarterback on the team instead of two (Geno Smith, Matt Schaub)?
