Motherwell to Play European Games at Airdrie's Excelsior Stadium

Andy Muirhead by Correspondent Written on June 13, 2009

Motherwell have confirmed that they will play their Europa League qualifying ties at Airdrie’s Excelsior Stadium next season. Fir Park is currently undergoing extensive work. Motherwell, who qualified via their Fair Play record, will find out their first-round opponents when the draw is made on 22nd June in Geneva. The first leg of the first qualifying round is 2 July, with the return tie a week later.

Motherwell will hopefully have their new manager in place by then, Mark McGhee having left on Friday to take over at Scottish Premier League rivals Aberdeen.

Excelsior Stadium, the home of Second Division club Airdrie United, is approved by European football’s governing body and played host to Queen of the South’s Uefa Cup tie against the Danish side Nordsjaelland in August. Motherwell’s first match at Fir Park after the work is finished will be a pre-season friendly against Wigan Athletic on 8 August.

That will be the last warm-up game before the start of the 2009-10 Scottish Premier League season.
