On the same day it was revealed that Per Mertesacker and Tomas Rosicky put pen to paper on new deals to extend their stays with Arsenal, Mertesacker revealed that his love for the North London club runs deep.

In a simple picture of a young Mertesacker, he told his fans that he returned from his first trip to England as a young boy with an Arsenal shirt and how he wore it proudly in front of his German friends.

Mertesacker's post will surely propel the giant German defender to even greater heights among the Arsenal faithful.

He wrote on his Facebook page

Being the first time back to England as a little boy I brought an Arsenal jersey back with me as a souvenir. And as you can see in the picture I was so proud wearing it when playing football with my friends.

Many years later I became a real Gunner being even more proud to wear the Arsenal jersey. I am truly thankful to the club and the supporters for the time I had so far here. And today I am deeply proud to have extended my contract with Arsenal.

Proud to be a gunner!
