Manchester City’s coach, Manuel Pellegrini, spoke with reporters about where his club stands. “We are the only club with the chance to try to win all the competitions. We are going to try although we know it is not easy,” he said.
He was referring to his team still being involved in the FA Cup and currently in the hunt for the PL title. His team seem motivated to win the games ahead.
In the final game of the Carling Cup, Manchester City defeated Sunderland after being down 0-1 at the half. The team showed perseverance and teamwork to earn the victory with a final score of 3-1.
As indicated by WhoScored.com, Manchester City held the ball for the majority of the match, showing that the team won’t likely face problems when they play Sunderland again in a couple of weeks. However, Pellegrini’s team fell asleep for a few minutes before the end of the first half, almost leading to an extra goal for Sunderland.
If Manchester City are able to stay on their toes and focused for the entirety of the upcoming games, they have a path to the PL title.
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho touched on this when addressing the media. “If I win every game until the end of the season, all 10 – which we won’t – maybe we are not champions. If they win all 12 games they have, they are champions. They have their destiny in their hands,” he said.
Mourinho is definitely correct about what he said, although it is going to be very difficult for Manchester City to win all 12 of their remaining games.
Roberto Mancini, former City boss and current Galatasaray manager, also spoke with reporters about his thoughts on the matter. "Man City will fight with Chelsea, I think. Chelsea have improved a lot in the last two months, but I think in the end City will win the title,” he said.
Let’s take a look at why Manchester City are a favorite above these other teams.
|How Manchester City Stacks Up Against the Leaders|
|Games Remaining||Biggest Games Remaining in the Season|
|Manchester City||12||Arsenal, Liverpool|
|Liverpool||10||Man United, Tottenham, Man City, Chelsea|
|Chelsea||11||Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham|
First of all, as the table shows on a basic level, Manchester City only have two major games coming up compared to Chelsea's four. Chelsea need to win the remainder of their games to put them in the best position for the title.
Manchester City are also coming off a tournament win that will have their momentum pushing them forward for the rest of the season. If they are able to pull off the FA Cup victory as well, the team will have new levels of confidence that will make them difficult to compete with.
The last results from matchups that look to be the toughest on Chelsea's schedule have either been ties or fairly close games. While a win is a win, the team need confidence and strong defense to propel them to the title.
Liverpool must face Manchester City again before the season is over. Previously this season, Manchester City came out on top. Of course, anything could happen during the game. Tottenham don't seem to be much competition for Liverpool, with the Reds previously blowing them out in a 5-0 victory.
Mourinho may just be wanting to take the pressure off of his team for the time being.
However, if Manchester City, as he said, have destiny in their own hands, it will be a tough road to the finish for all three of these teams if they want to go home with the trophy.
