Stevens was ejected with less than one minute remaining in the Celtics' 105-98 loss to the Sacramento Kings on Saturday night.
The ejection was the culmination of an incredibly frustrating night, both for the coach and his players. Boston had a chance to pull within one possession late, but simply could not put the ball in the basket until it was too late.
With Kings center DeMarcus Cousins manhandling the Celtics down low—NESN.com's Ben Watanabe accused the big man of "getting away with murder—Stevens and forward Gerald Wallace decided they'd had enough.
Here is the footage:
On the Coach Ejection Rage scale—zero to Bob Knight—Stevens scored about a 0.5. Not only did the coach forget to throw his chair onto the court, he still had the presence of mind to put the cap back on his marker and set down his clipboard before getting tossed, per ESPN Boston's Chris Forsberg.
Amateur move, Mr. Stevens. That clipboard would have been perfect for throwing into the stands (make sure to fling it like a Frisbee), and the marker could have been used to write "REFS U SUCK!!!" in giant letters across the hardwood.
But what Stevens lacked in anger, he more than made up for in snark. Per the Boston Globe's Gary Washburn, CSNNE.com's Rich Levine and The Sacramento Bee's Ailene Voisin:
Perhaps his fellow coaches should star calling him "Catty Brad."
According to the Boston Globe's Baxter Holmes, this was the first time the former Butler University has been ejected from a game at any level. Will Stevens develop a taste for this kind of coaching? Will he start racking up technicals at a rate that would put DeMarcus Cousins to shame?
The Celtics conclude their four-game road trip on Monday night against the Utah Jazz. Stay tuned for another chance to see a vintage Brad Stevens meltdown.
