Jose Mourinho would do well to raid his former club Real Madrid in the summer transfer window to claim the services of one of his old favourites, German international Sami Khedira.
The 26-year-old was linked with a move to West London last summer but a long-term knee injury prevented this.
And as reported by Jamie Anderson in the Sunday Express, both parties are seemingly still interested in a potential move:
Real Madrid's injured midfielder Sami Khedira is a transfer target for Chelsea as Jose Mourinho looks to further bolster his midfield.
Khedira had been strongly linked with a move to Stamford Bridge in the summer, however a long-term knee injury dashed any hopes of Mourinho signing his former player.
The German international is said to be keen on a move away from the Bernabeu, and Chelsea would appear to be an ideal fit for the man who labelled himself as "one of Mourinho’s disciples."
The £21m signing of Nemanja Matic from Benfica in January may have brought greater defensive strength to the Chelsea midfield but bringing Khedira to Stamford Bridge would be a wise move, especially considering their recent FA Cup loss:
City rediscover their groove, Chelsea's defence buckles, and Mourinho picks a bad time to talk about failure http://t.co/cbpjHPN66d— Miguel Delaney (@MiguelDelaney) February 15, 2014
Matic is a solid player but Khedira's greater versatility would make him ideal as a replacement for the ever-underwhelming John Obi Mikel and the ageing, but still brilliant, Frank Lampard:
Frank Lampard has completed 42% of his crosses this season. No Premier League player has a better success rate (50+ crosses).— Squawka Football (@Squawka) February 11, 2014
Matic and Khedira pairing up in the centre of midfield for Chelsea would certainly be formidable and Khedira would provide more class than Mikel currently does.
Mourinho must strengthen his squad further if he is to consistently combat Manchester City in the league, as City have the resources to maintain form over the length of a season.
"We are not a squad like Man City's with every player in the best moment of their careers, all of them working together for quite a long time."
And he is right. Despite sitting top of the Premier League, their squad is not as good as Manchester City's and if Matic gets injured Chelsea will be in trouble.
The attacking talents of Eden Hazard, Ramires, Oscar and Willian are not properly supported in the defensive midfield department.
Should Chelsea sign Sami Khedira?
Sami Khedira is the perfect fit for Chelsea and Mourinho. Known and liked by the manager and eager to work for him, Khedira should be a key target in the summer.
Chelsea fans should not be concerned that he is currently out injured, he will only be signed if he is fully fit.
Conversely, the fact that he is unlikely to play in the World Cup in Brazil will mean a full summer to recuperate and the former Stuttgart man could be fresh for the start of the Premier League season.
