Updates from Friday, Feb. 14
Commercial Appeal reporter Ronald Tillery has an update on Gasol's MRI:
This is about as close as it gets to a doomsday scenario for the Memphis Grizzlies. Marc Gasol left Wednesday night's game against the Orlando Magic after he tweaked the same left knee that forced him to miss a ton of time earlier in the year, per Ronald Tillery of the Commercial Appeal:
Gasol will not return after aggravating left knee injury. Griz lead Magic 72-67 with 7 minutes left— Ronald Tillery (@CAGrizBeat) February 13, 2014
The good news is that Gasol didn't appear to be in serious pain. He was gesturing to the coaches and trainers that he wanted back in, but they refused to let him do so, per Grizzlies sideline reporter Rob Fischer:
Last timeout: Judging from body language & reading lips, Marc Gasol wants to go back into this game. Don't know if he will, but encouraging— Rob Fischer (@thefishnation) February 13, 2014
After the game Tillery added:
Gasol will have MRI at some point during break but likely not tomorrow and not in Memphis— Ronald Tillery (@CAGrizBeat) February 13, 2014
Gasol: “It’s scary when it happens but I think we’re going to be Ok."— Ronald Tillery (@CAGrizBeat) February 13, 2014
Gasol: "We’re going to get it checked to make sure everything is Ok. But it feels a lot better than it did the first time.”— Ronald Tillery (@CAGrizBeat) February 13, 2014
There's no question as to Gasol's importance to Memphis. The team did well enough hanging around the playoff picture in the Western Conference in his absence, but there's no way it could handle another lengthy injury.
The Grizzlies had won eight of their past 11 coming into Wednesday, climbing to within two games of the eighth spot.
In order to get back into the postseason, they'll need Gasol healthy going forward.
