Major League Baseball's First-Year Player Draft will begin tonight at 6 p.m. ET. The Washington Nationals have the first pick and are expected to take San Diego State pitcher Stephen Strasburg. The kid may turn out to be a fine player, but lets hold off on the Hall of Fame induction until after he throws a pitch in the big leagues. Here are some pretty good players that were not drafted in the first round (or anywhere close).
John Smoltz
John Smoltz was selected by the Tigers in the 22nd round of the 1985 draft.
Brad Ausmus
Brad Ausmus was selected by the Yankees in the 48th round of the 1987 draft.
Mike Piazza
Mike Piazza was selected by the Dodgers in the 62nd round of the 1988 draft.
Jim Thome
Jim Thome was selected by the Indians in the 13th round of the 1989 draft.
Jason Isringhausen
Jason Isringhausen was selected by the Mets in the 44th round of the 1991 draft.
Raul Ibanez
Raul Ibanez was selected by the Mariners in the 36th round of the 1992 draft.
Roy Oswalt
Roy Oswalt was selected by the Astros in the 23rd round of the 1996 draft.
Albert Pujols
Albert Pujols was selected by the Cardinals in the 13th round of the 1999 draft.
Jake Peavy
Jake Peavy was selected by the Padres in the 15th round of the 1999 draft.
Jason Bay
