American snowboarding icon Shaun White saw his Olympic reign come to a close on Tuesday with a disappointing fourth place finish in the halfpipe competition.
Swiss rider Iouri Podladtchikov pulled out the run of his life to capture the gold medal. He stomped a double cork 1440 on his final run to clinch a medal-winning score of 94.75. Japan put two riders on the podium with 15-year old Ayumu Hirano taking silver and Taku Hiraoka claiming the bronze medal.
White, the heavy favorite, couldn't make up for multipe mistakes on his first run. His fourth-place finish marks the first time in his Olympic history that he has not won gold. The placement is especially disappointing given that White pulled out of the slopestyle competition earlier in the week expressly to focus on halfpipe.
The two other Americans, Danny Davis and Greg Bretz, just couldn't put it together as each fell twice.
