Manchester United Transfer News: Toni Kroos Signing Would Lift David Moyes' Side

With Jamie Sanderson of the Metro reporting that Bayern Munich star Toni Kroos is set to leave the club after failing to agree on a new contract, David Moyes could lift the Red Devils' fortunes by making a bid in the summer.

Kroos took to his official Facebook page (h/t the Metro) and released a statement about his future, which will send a number of teams, including United, on alert:

A lot has been said about me and my future over the past few weeks.

I love Bayern and I don’t mind that I am a squad player at the moment. However, me and the club have not been able to agree a contract renewal – and we’ll now see what the future bring

Under new manager Pep Guardiola, Kroos has been rotated in recent months, with ex-Barcelona starlet Thiago Alcantara rising in the midfield ranks. The young Barcelona recruit scored a fantastic 93rd-minute winner against Stuttgart recently:

The ex-Barcelona coach has even moved Philipp Lahm to midfield, preferring the club captain's stability and temperament.

With the return of Bastian Schweinsteiger, who the club reports has returned to training for Bayern this week, Kroos may now find his chances and negotiating power limited. He is out of contract in 18 months' time and contract talks have stalled.

United are desperate to improve their midfield despite the marquee signing of Juan Mata from Chelsea for £37 million. According to Patrick McCarry of TheJournal.ie (h/t Eurosport), manager David Moyes was seen attending Bayern Munich’s 2-0 win over Borussia Monchengladbach in January.

Injuries to Marouane Fellaini and Michael Carrick have left manager Moyes with Tom Cleverley, Ryan Giggs and even Wayne Rooney in the central midfielder berth.

United have also had to rely on young Adnan Januzaj after long-term injuries to Robin van Persie and Rooney have dampened United's creative spark.

Kroos would be a welcome addition to the team if United can pull off the transfer, with John Edwards of the Daily Mail suggesting that Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool all vying for his signature.

According to McCarry, German newspaper Bild reported that Moyes attended the Bayern game with a man called Sascha Breese from the Sports Total agency and an associate of Kroos’ agent, Volker Struth.

The Premier League champions have struggled this season and are rooted in seventh place in the Premier League after suffering their eighth defeat of the season to Stoke City on Saturday.

United face strugglers Fulham at Old Trafford this Sunday before a tough trip to current league leaders Arsenal next Wednesday.

Hopes of securing a Champions League place look dim after Saturday's defeat put them seven points behind Liverpool, who occupy the fourth spot.

Despite the signing of Mata, United need an overhaul. Club captain Nemanja Vidic looks set to leave after contract talks were not forthcoming and Mark Ogden of the Daily Telegraph reports that he's set to sign with Inter Milan.

Meanwhile, Wilfried Zaha joined Cardiff City on loan and midfielder Anderson joined Italian side Fiorentina.

Despite playing in 18 Bundesliga games this season, Kroos has struggled to influence games like he did last season in Bayern's multi-trophy-winning season under former manager Jupp Heynckes.

The midfielder has only scored two goals this season—one goal for Bayern, whilst his other goal came for Germany in World Cup qualifying.

Kroos reacted furiously when he was substituted against Stuttgart and recently found himself demoted to the bench for Sunday’s 5-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt.

According to Edwards, Kroos has been looking to renew his contract from just over £60,000 a week to around £150,000. However, Bayern have bluntly told him talks over a new deal will remain on hold until he lowers his sights.
