Bode Miller is bold, something that has served him well on the slopes but also allowed him to win the heart of his wife, Morgan Miller (formerly Morgan Beck).

The heavily decorated alpine skier is headed back to the Winter Olympics, descending upon Sochi for his fifth Olympiad, hoping to bring some gold to the twilight of his career.

Miller isn't alone, something that has been true for the last couple of tumultuous years, because his wife Morgan, a professional beach volleyball player, is by his side taking it all in.

Here she is on the other side of the Olympic experience in one of her tweets ahead of the Sochi Games:

The two have only been married since October of 2012, but have already enjoyed and endured a lifetime of highs and travails.

The Colorado Springs Gazette's Allyson Burger chronicles a brief courting period for the two athletes, which begins with quite the humorous start.

Burger writes, "Beck says she turned a determined Miller down every day of the tournament until at her last match when he walked up to her and said, 'I don’t want to freak you out, but we’re soul mates.'"

USA Today's Kelly Whiteside has a more intricate breakdown of the couple's extremely short courting period between the 26-year-old pro beach volleyball player and the 36-year-old who has five Olympic medals headed into Sochi.

The two really became acquainted when Beck was playing in a tournament. Miller asked to squire her to dinner a couple of times and was shut down rather quickly.

After his offer of drinks was dismissed, Miller continued to persist, which proved to be the wise decision. Here is how Whiteside paints the colorful exchange:

"Well, I'm going to come to your tournament tomorrow."

"Please don't come. I don't want you there. I don't want any distractions."

Miller showed up anyway and cheered enthusiastically throughout.

"I thought, 'Who is this guy? He needs to go away.'"

After the last match, Beck saw Miller walking toward her.

"Oh my gosh, he needs to just disappear," she said.

She tried to walk away. Miller persisted. "I don't want to freak you out, but we're soul mates," Miller told her.

"At that point, I'm thinking this guy is absolutely crazy," she said.

Within a month and a half of meeting, Miller bought an engagement ring.

A Jan. 30 tweet from Morgan seems apropos at the moment:

In Dec. 2012, Miller accidentally hit his new bride with an errant golf ball, an image that quickly made the Internet rounds. Thankfully, Morgan relied on her sunglasses and humor to deflect most of the shot.

Life can deliver pain that comes with a chuckle, but can also weigh one down with unbelievable burden. Married just over a year, the Millers have unfortunately felt a wealth of hardship.

Burger reminds that the couple has had to deal with two custody battles for children Miller had in previous relationships.

In Jan. of 2012, Morgan suffered a miscarriage of the couple's first child, which would begin a year filled with anguish, because in April, Miller lost his brother Chelone

Whiteside writes the 29-year-old, "died of an apparent seizure thought to be related to the traumatic brain injury he sustained in a motorcycle accident in 2005."

The USA Today report continues, issuing that perhaps Miller and his wife aren't alone on their tour of Sochi: "Miller said he had 'an unusual physical response' and perhaps absorbed what he calls a little bit of his brother's 'life force. That energy definitely has parts of his identity in it.'"

Fast forward to the week entering Sochi, and you get the sense from their Twitter feeds that each are welcoming the games as an unlikely respite.

The usual nerves and fear that coincide with the Olympic Games are instead welcomed with weary arms in need of a far more joyful turn in 2014.

We always cheer for Miller, but the screams might be a tad bit louder as he comes down the hill for what might be his final Olympic Games.
