Florida Football: Meet the Gators' 2014 Recruiting Class

1 of 26

    Steve Dykes-USA TODAY Sports

It has been a long time since a Florida Gators recruiting class has disappointed and this year has been no different. The 2014 class includes 24 players and talent at just about every position.

From an elite-level quarterback to massive defensive linemen and a couple of playmakers at the skill positions, the Gators' coaching staff did just about everything it needed to do in order to take the next step to turning this program around.

But you've heard about the names long enough, it's time to actually meet the players who have signed on the dotted line.

Here's a breakdown of each Florida Gator commitment.

Jalen Tabor

2 of 26
    • Height/Weight: 6'1", 182 lbs
    • Position/Ranking: 5-star CB, No. 14 overall
    • High School: Friendship Academy (Washington, D.C.)
    • Other Finalists: Alabama, Arizona, Maryland
    • Commitment Date: January 9, 2014; enrolled early on January 13.
    • Tabor is a press corner who uses his long body to get physical with receivers at the line of scrimmage. He plays the ball well and is terrific at defending the run. Although Florida's secondary is its strength, don't be surprised if Tabor is a starter at some point in his freshman season at either corner or nickelback. Either way, he's pretty much guaranteed early playing time.

Will Grier

3 of 26
    • Height/Weight: 6'3", 187 lbs
    • Position/Ranking: 4-star QB, No. 48 overall
    • High School: Davidson Day (Davidson, N.C.)
    • Other Finalists: North Carolina, Tennessee
    • Commit Date: December 19, 2012; enrolled early on January 7.
    • Grier has a quick release, delivers the ball accurately and has excellent touch. He's also quite mobile given his size. While some Florida fans will be chanting for him to become the starter right away, I'm not sure he's an immediate threat to a more experienced Jeff Driskel. However, it won't be long before everybody gets a chance to see what he can do.

Duke Dawson

    • Height/Weight: 5'11", 197 lbs
    • Position/Ranking: 4-star CB/S, No. 194 overall
    • High School: Dixie County (Cross City, Fla.)
    • Other Finalists: Alabama, Florida State
    • Commit Date: January 8, 2013; enrolled early on January 7, 2014.
    • Dawson is a versatile player who can play anywhere in the secondary and possibly even wide receiver. He'll likely spend his Florida days at cornerback due to his aggressiveness and ability to drop the hammer. He's still a bit raw at the position, but seeing him in certain packages as a freshman—particularly at nickelback—isn't out of the question.

Nolan Kelleher

5 of 26

    Credit: 247Sports
    • Height/Weight: 6'6", 305 lbs
    • Position/Ranking: 3-star OG, No. 356 Overall
    • High School: Wando (Mount Pleasant, S.C.)
    • Other Finalists: Clemson
    • Commit Date: August 10, 2013; enrolled early on January 7, 2014.
    • Nolan Kelleher is a tough kid who plays with an extremely high motor and knows how to finish blocks. He basically plays the position the way every offensive lineman should. Although he also spent time at tackle, he's a better fit on the inside, which means he must bulk up a little more. Still, he has a great chance to move up the depth chart and earn at the very least spotty playing time as a freshman.

Brandon Powell

6 of 26

    Credit: 247Sports
    • Height/Weight: 5'9", 175 lbs
    • Position/Ranking: 3-star ATH, No. 400 overall
    • High School: Deerfield Beach (Deerfield Beach, Fla.)
    • Other Finalists: Miami, Auburn
    • Commit Date: January 10, 2013; enrolled early on January 10, 2014.
    • Florida needed explosiveness in the backfield and that's exactly what Brandon Powell brings to the table. He finds the hole quickly, hits it and can be gone if the defense isn't careful. Given Florida's lack of playmakers on offense, it wouldn't surprise me at all if Powell found a role as a freshman. The Gators need game-changers and Powell is just that.

Taven Bryan

7 of 26

    Credit: 247Sports
    • Height/Weight: 6'5", 250 lbs
    • Position/Ranking: 3-star OT, No. 533 overall
    • High School: Natrona County (Casper, Wyo.)
    • Other Finalists: Nebraska
    • Commit Date: June 10, 2013; enrolled early on January 6, 2014.
    • Taven Bryan is an interesting player to watch due to the fact that he can play multiple positions. He could stick to offensive line, play tight end or even defensive end. The verdict is still out on where he will spend most of his time. Just know he has the size and athleticism to be a great player and could be one of the main steals of this class. Don't count on early playing time given his small frame.

DeAndre Goolsby

8 of 26

    Credit: 247Sports
    • Height/Weight: 6'4", 225 lbs
    • Position/Ranking: 3-star TE, No. 536 overall
    • High School: Derby (Derby, Kan.)
    • Other Finalists: Arkansas
    • Commit Date: November 8, 2013; enrolled early on January 10, 2014.
    • Florida had only two receptions from the tight end position last season. It's safe to say DeAndre Goolsby will be given every chance to see the field rather early. He still needs to add weight to his slim frame, but he's an athletic body who will likely be used in many ways within this Florida offense. He'll certainly be thrown into the rotation.

Kavaris Harkless

9 of 26

    Credit: 247Sports
    • Height/Weight: 6'5", 273 lbs
    • Position/Ranking: 3-star OT, No. 812 overall
    • High School: Trinity Christian Academy (Jacksonville, Fla.)
    • Other Finalists: Louisville
    • Commit Date: January 5, 2013; enrolled early on January 8, 2014.
    • Kavaris Harkless is another offensive lineman who plays with a considerable mean streak. He finishes plays by throwing the defender into the dirt, sometimes even after the play is already finished. He plays with good pad level and does a nice job of getting to the second level. Like with any position on Florida's offense, a spot on the offensive line is up for grabs. Harkless is a sleeper heading into spring ball, but he'll probably be given an extra year to add on weight.

Drew Sarvary

10 of 26

    Credit: 247Sports
    • Height/Weight: 6'6", 310 lbs
    • Position/Ranking: 3-star OT, No. 150 overall
    • High School: Tallahassee Leon (Tallahassee, Fla.)
    • Other Finalists: None
    • Commit Date: December 18, 2013; enrolled early on January 6, 2014.
    • Florida has only five offensive linemen with starting experience. Drew Sarvary started 10 games as a freshman for Florida A&M. With him getting reps in spring ball, he's a serious candidate to see the field early next season and could eventually take somebody's job if everything goes well. He has great size and moves better than you'd expect.

Gerald Willis

11 of 26
    • Height/Weight: 6'3", 275 lbs
    • Position/Ranking: 5-star DT/DE, No. 34 overall
    • High School: Tallahassee Leon (Tallahassee, Fla.)
    • Other Finalists: LSU, Texas A&M
    • Commit Date: January 2, 2014
    • Gerald Willis spent most of his high school career at defensive end, but he's probably better off shifting to defensive tackle. He gets off the ball well and has an elite level of athleticism. Considering Willis is one of the top players in this class and has a lot to offer, he'll certainly see considerable playing time as a freshman.

Thomas Holley

12 of 26
    • Height/Weight: 6'4", 285 lbs
    • Position/Ranking: 5-star DT, No. 77 overall
    • High School: Abraham Lincoln (Brooklyn, N.Y.)
    • Other Finalists: Penn State, Ohio State
    • Commit Date: January 15, 2014
    • Thomas Holley is slightly bigger than Willis, but lacks in the experience department due to taking on football as a junior in high school. Still, his size, athleticism and explosion off the ball are insane. He's still a bit of a project and needs to learn how to use his hands, but he remains one of the better players in this class and is simply too talented to leave off the field.

David Sharpe

13 of 26
    • Height/Weight: 6'6", 318 lbs
    • Position/Ranking: 4-star OT, No. 112 overall
    • High School: Duncan U. Fletcher (Jacksonville, Fla.)
    • Other Finalists: Tennessee, Florida State
    • Commit Date: December 12, 2013
    • There's no doubt in my mind that David Sharpe is going to be a great offensive lineman. He has the size, athleticism, length, footwork and anything else you look for from an elite lineman. Again, considering Florida has depth issues along the offensive line, it wouldn't surprise me if Sharpe made the two-deep depth chart. The kid is a special talent who will make Florida fans extremely happy.

Treon Harris

14 of 26
    • Height/Weight: 5'11", 180 lbs
    • Position/Ranking: 4-star QB, No. 123 overall
    • High School: Booker T. Washington (Miami, Fla.)
    • Other Finalists: Florida State
    • Commit Date: February 5, 2014
    • Harris was a longtime Florida State commitment and flipped at the last second, so there's obviously a plan for him within the offense. His skill set fits the spread offense Kurt Roper plans to run, but I'm not sure he's polished enough as a passer to beat out a more talented Will Grier at the quarterback position. Still, he's an athlete who will only make Florida's offense better.

J.C. Jackson

15 of 26
    • Height/Weight: 5'10", 180 lbs
    • Position/Ranking: 4-star WR/CB, No. 131 overall
    • High School: Immokalee (Immokalee, Fla.)
    • Other Finalists: Miami, Florida State
    • Commit Date: February 5, 2014
    • Harris could play either side of the ball with his combination of hands and terrific speed. He plays the ball well and is a playmaker with the ball in his hands. He's just a natural athlete who adds flair to this Gator team. It's going to be interesting to see where he plays and how quickly he can put his talents onto the field.

Andrew Mike

16 of 26
    • Height/Weight: 6'7", 270 lbs
    • Position/Ranking: 3-star OT, No. 416 overall
    • High School: Sabino (Tucson, Ariz.)
    • Other Finalists: Arkansas, Vanderbilt
    • Commit Date: February 4, 2014
    • Andrew Mike looked like he was set for Vanderbilt before having a last-second change of heart. The guy with two first names has a massive frame at 6'7" that he is just beginning to fill in. He's light on his feet and plays with great balance. With his frame, he has the potential to be a really good player for the Gators' offensive line in due time.

Khairi Clark

17 of 26
    • Height/Weight: 6'2", 325 lbs
    • Position/Ranking: 4-star DT, No. 183 overall
    • High School: Chaminade-Madonna Prep (Hollywood, Fla.)
    • Other Finalists: Miami
    • Commit Date: June 22, 2013
    • Khairi Clark has a wide body and plays the game with overwhelming power. However, he's surprisingly quick for his size and gets off the ball well. He's one of the top run-stoppers in this year's class and could find himself in the mix of a loaded defense rather early if the coaching staff feels the same way.

Quincy Wilson

18 of 26
    • Height/Weight: 6'1", 196 lbs
    • Position/Ranking: 3-star S, No. 371 overall
    • High School: University School (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.)
    • Other Finalists: Ohio State
    • Commit Date: August 1, 2013
    • Quincy Wilson is the son of former Miami Hurricane defensive back Chad Wilson. He's capable of playing safety or cornerback and may be better at corner due to his knack for jamming receivers at the line of scrimmage. He'll have to impress to emerge from a crowded secondary, but I'd much rather see him spend a year growing into his body.

Moral Stephens

19 of 26
    • Height/Weight: 6'4", 200 lbs
    • Position/Ranking: 3-star WR/TE, No. 423 overall
    • High School: Taylor County (Perry, Fla.)
    • Other Finalists: Kentucky, Miami
    • Commit Date: December 12, 2013
    • Moral Stephens is going to be a matchup nightmare for opposing defenses. He has the size to line up just about anywhere, but also moves well and runs solid routes. New offensive coordinator Kurt Roper loves involving the tight end position in his offense and Stephens could be part of his plans sooner rather than later.

Ryan Sousa

20 of 26
    • Height/Weight: 6'0", 177 lbs
    • Position/Ranking: 3-star WR, No. 493 overall
    • High School: Lake Nona (Orlando, Fla.)
    • Other Finalists: Florida State
    • Commit Date: December 2, 2013
    • Ryan Sousa doesn't have great speed and isn't very big, but he's as sure-handed a receiver as you're going to find in this class. He catches the ball nicely away from his body and picks up yards after the catch. What you see is what you get with Sousa. As is the case with all offensive players, he'll be given a shot to see the field.

Travaris Dorsey

21 of 26
    • Height/Weight: 6'2", 315 lbs
    • Position/Ranking: 3-star OG, No. 602 overall
    • High School: Raines (Jacksonville, Fla.)
    • Other Finalists: North Carolina
    • Commit Date: February 16, 2013
    • Travaris Dorsey played offensive tackle in high school,, so it's going to take a while adjusting to the inside. That means he's likely going to redshirt his freshman season. However, the sky is really the limit for him with his size and explosion off the ball. He's a real powerful kid who has a ton of potential.

C.J. Worton

22 of 26
    • Height/Weight: 6'1", 175 lbs
    • Position/Ranking: 4-star WR, No. 424 overall
    • High School: South Dade (Homestead, Fla.)
    • Other Finalists: Miami
    • Commit Date: February 5, 2014
    • Worton has the ability to see immediate playing time due to his great hands and ability to make plays after the catch. He makes tough catches look easy and that's what is needed right now for the Gators. He isn't the most gifted receiver when it comes to speed or athleticism, but he simply catches the football every time. Florida will take it.

Justus Reed

23 of 26
    • Height/Weight: 6'3", 216 lbs
    • Position/Ranking: 3-star DE, No. 841 overall
    • High School: Clearwater Central Catholic (Clearwater, Fla.)
    • Other Finalists: North Carolina
    • Commit Date: July 25, 2013
    • Justus Reed is an athletic defensive end who turns the corner well and has great range. To illustrate his athletic ability, he even spent some time playing wide receiver for his high school. He gets off the ball well and knows how to use his hands. He still needs to add weight to his upper body, which means he'll likely redshirt.

C'yontai Lewis

24 of 26
    • Height/Weight: 6'5", 215 lbs
    • Position/Ranking: 3-star TE, No. 869 overall
    • High School: Kingwood Christian (Tuscaloosa, Ala.)
    • Other Finalists: Alabama, Mississippi State
    • Commit Date: May 23, 2013
    • C'yontai Lewis is a tough kid who has great hands and could also play wide receiver with his athleticism. He's still a bit raw at the position and needs to continue to grow into his body, but he could be an impact player within a year or two. He'll likely redshirt.

Deiondre Porter

25 of 26
    • Height/Weight: 6'1", 166 lbs
    • Position/Ranking: 3-star ATH, No. 1294 overall
    • High School: Jefferson (Tampa, Fla.)
    • Other Finalists: Central Florida, South Florida
    • Commit Date: January 20, 2014
    • Deiondre Porter needs to spend a year growing into his small frame and finding out where he fits on the team. He played quarterback in high school, but many scouts believe his true position is safety. Simply put, he's a playmaker with the ball in his hands. I wouldn't be surprised if he found a way to remain on offense as a possible Percy Harvin-type guy.
