The Syracuse men's basketball team improved to 21-0 on Saturday with a thrilling 91-89 overtime win over Duke at the Carrier Dome. With the win, Syracuse set the record for the best start in school history, previously held by the 2011-12 team.
That 2011-12 team started 20-0 but lost its 21st game to a Notre Dame team that was just 11-8 at the time. Interestingly enough, this year's Orange squad plays its next game Monday against a 12-10 Notre Dame team that could use a spark. Back in 2011-12, the upset win over 'Cuse sparked an impressive nine-game win streak that propelled the Fighting Irish into the NCAA tournament.
Of course, this time around the two teams will be facing off as members of the ACC, after years of battling in the Big East. As an 8-0 conference record suggests, life in the ACC seems to be treating Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim well, following a 34-year run in the Big East that included nine regular-season conference championships.
