UFC 169 Results: Overeem Fought Smart but Isn't Ready for Velasquez, JDS
USA Today

Alistair Overeem beat Frank Mir at UFC 169. That being said, it was not his most impressive performance, and he should not be expecting huge things in the aftermath.

He definitely outstruck Mir. One could say he outgrappled him as well. However, there was still something to be desired out of the Dutch striker, who many believed would stop Mir within the three rounds with his K-1 championship-level striking.

He cruised to a decision. Yes, it was a three-to-win decision, but it wasn't a jaw-dropping performance that had critics and fans singing his praises.

Overeem won, but he is far from where he wants to be. He likely wants a title bout or a meeting with a Top Three guy, but he needs to work his way back up, especially since he came into UFC 169 on a two-fight skid.

He was blasted by Antonio Silva. He was then plastered by Travis Browne. A win over Mir should not reverse that.

That's why he should not fight Cain Velasquez or Junior dos Santos in his next bout. The UFC champion should fight the winner of Browne vs. Fabricio Werdum in his next bout, and JDS should have a guy who is more on track than Overeem.

Honestly, a fight with a Top 10 fighter who is not Velasquez or dos Santos (or Werdum or Browne) would work well for Overeem. Josh Barnett, Stipe Miocic and Mark Hunt are ready and waiting and could be Overeem's key to getting back into title talks.

The big thing was that he got back in the win column. His history and style won't keep him far from the title picture.

In an ideal world, he would meet Hunt next. Both are big-time strikers who could main event a free card and draw a decent audience.

For now, though, keep him away from Velasquez and dos Santos. He needs another high-profile win to rebuild his star power.
