The Bengals are a team that surprised a lot of people last season.  They were really good the season before and were expected to at least be competitive.

That didn't happen.

Instead, they now have to deal with the loss of Chris Henry, and the whole Chad Johnson debacle.

They aren't exactly a law abiding team.  Rumors are that they are going to just make the new uniform an orange jumpsuit with shackles.

Even their practice squad can't stay out of trouble, I mean, this is getting ridiculous.

They weren't nearly as good rushing the ball as they have been with Corey Dillon first and Rudy Johnson of late.

Their defense continued to be horrible and they will likely look there for their first pick.

But what are some other things that they could do?

Possible Draft Directions

They don't have a tight end.  Right now Ben Utecht looks like the best option, and that is just scary.  They could get Fred Davis in the second round.

They weren't exactly stellar on the defensive line last season.  Chris Long, Vernon Gholston, and Glenn Dorsey will likely be off the board by now.  They signed Antwan Odom this off-season and he had 8 sacks last season, but one lineman does not a line make.

They could take Sedrick Ellis, but he could possibly be off the board as well.

Continuing the defensive woes, the linebacker core hasn't exactly been strong.  Dan Connor or Curtis Lofton could be second round solutions.

Finally, they need safety help. Thomas DeCoud or Marcuss Griffin are 3rd round possibilities.

Only one more to go, I gotta get it out tomorrow or Friday.  So, the New Orleans Saints are on the clock.  What are they going to do with thier pick on Draft Day?  Stay tuned to find out.

I'm Joe W.

  1. Nice summary of Cincinnati's needs. I think they will get Ellis, and I don't think he will be taken off the board before number nine is picked.

    Good job.

  2. Not bad, but a closer look shows their secondary is in pretty good shape with the young guys they drafted the last two years ago. I actually have an article on here about the Bengals secondary. If Ellis is still there at 9, they will sprint to the podium with their choice.

    1. They look just fine at corner, but they aren't exactly set at safety. I agree with Sedrick Ellis to be the pick.

  3. Well you're right about that, and they don't have big names at safety, especially after losing Madeiu Williams, but they're really high on Chinedum Ndukwe and Marvin White, guys that drafted last year. Plus they have Dexter Jackson for some veteran leadership. I don't doubt they may go safety later on the draft, maybe with one of the two 3rd rounders they have, if not later.

  4. I have a couple problems with your draft pick ideas.

First off, who do you think they should get in the first round? All you did was bring up players you think might be gone, but you never said who they will pick. I'm expecting Sedrick Ellis or Keith Rivers.

Their Defensive line is bad, but a pick won't make it better. They constantly take players in the draft to help, but no progress has been made. I think their problems at this spot are coming from coaching and doing a bad job at keeping them. Go for a DL in 2nd or 3rd.

Other problem with this: They weren't very good the season before last. They were 8-8.
It's been longer than people realize since they were in the playoffs.

    1. This is a series about what teams could do and areas where they need improvement. That being said, I think that Ellis or Rivers are the safest picks. Also, they were a young, emerging team that had a lot of talent, so people expected them to make gains upon the playoff season the previous year.

  5. I just heard that the Bengals are "very focused" on getting another running back in the first round this year.
    HORRIBLE MOVE!
we can't get McFadden, so that most likely means we'll get Mendenhall. Granted, he is a great player, but what the hell. We already have a ton of RB's who are fine. We don't need another.

Marvin. I congratulate you for getting the Bengals to the playoffs, but you have completely reversed over the past 2 years.

    1. I have to agree with that point. Mendenhall is a great player (of course I would think this, Illinois is my favorite team) but I'm not sure he's #9 in the draft great.
