Phoenix Coyotes captain Shane Doan recorded his 500th career assist in Tuesday’s 3-0 win over the Los Angeles Kings. The milestone helper came on a second-period power play, when Doan split two Los Angeles defenders to set up Oliver Ekman-Larsson’s second goal of the night. With four points in his last four games, Doan appears to be past a mid-January slump that saw him tally just one point (an assist) over a six-game stretch.

The Coyotes’ longtime captain has been with the organization since he was selected seventh overall in the 1995 NHL entry draft. Despite his longevity and lofty standing around the league, Doan ranks a modest 17th in career assists among active players. He was a bit of a late bloomer, and, for all the good he’s done, Doan has never produced a point-per-game season.

He lacks the elite offensive skills of other star players, which explains why Doan did not get much recognition until the last few years. While he may not stack up to the Crosbys and Ovechkins of the league, Doan’s famed durability and grittiness should serve him well as he looks to further climb the active assists leaders chart. At the age of 37, has has 31 points in 40 games and looks as sharp as ever.
