Had Mike Gessel's last-gasp layup passed through the net, Iowa would have gone to another overtime with Michigan State.
Instead the shot didn't go, and the No. 15-ranked Hawkeyes fell 71-69 after outplaying the No. 7 team in the land for most of the night.
Matt Costello's late push allowed for the comeback. The sophomore scored 11 points and had 12 rebounds.
In true senior fashion, Keith Appling raised his level when he had to--like when games are on the line. With 16 points, he paced team scoring. With late free-throws, he saved it from a back-to-back loss.
Roy Devyn Marble scored a game-high 21 points.
Records: MSU 19-3, 8-1; Iowa 16-5, 5-3
