Kakuta has most recently been on loan with Vitesse Arnhem in Holland. The 22-year-old will be visiting his fifth loan destination from Chelsea with his spell in Rome. He's also had spells at Fulham, Bolton and Dijon.
Chelsea confirmed the signing of St Etienne defender Kurt Zouma on their official website on Friday afternoon.
The 19-year-old has signed a five-and-a-half year deal, and will be loaned back to the French club until the end of the current season.
Earlier, Ben Smith at BBC Sport reported that a £12 million deal to bring Zouma to London could be completed before the window closed.
According to Simon Jones of the Daily Mail, Chelsea are prepared to pay £3 million to sign Croatian youngster Mario Pasalic from Hajduk Split.
According to Ben Jefferson at The Express, Mario Mandzukic could leave Bayern Munich before the transfer window closes, with Chelsea among his potential destinations.
