On Sunday night, the WWE presented its annual Royal Rumble pay-per-view event live from the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh, Pa.
In the pre-show match, Road Dogg and Billy Gunn of the New Age Outlaws defeated Goldust and Cody Rhodes to become the new WWE Tag Team champions.
The Royal Rumble immediately kicked off with Daniel Bryan heading toward the ring for the event's first match against Bray Wyatt.
Match No. 1: Daniel Bryan vs. Bray Wyatt
Your winner via pinfall: Bray Wyatt.
What a terrific match to start the Royal Rumble pay-per-view. Although Wyatt had some extremely hard hits on Bryan, this match was conducted very evenly with tons of back-and-forth action between the two. This was a fun and action-packed match to open the Royal Rumble.
Match Rating: 4/5
Ric Flair, Jim Duggan and Shawn Michaels were introduced by WWE announcer Josh Matthews at a table booth and provided their take on the opening match and predictions on what will happen on the Royal Rumble.
Match No. 2: The Big Show vs. Brock Lesnar
Your winner via pinfall: Brock Lesnar.
Thanks to multiple chair shots to the back, Lesnar was able to get off to a very quick start and ultimately landed the pinfall despite the Big Show's comeback attempt. WWE played it smart and kept this one short.
Match Rating: 3/5
After the match, Lesnar took the steel chair at ringside and continued to smash it relentlessly on the Big Show's back. The Big Show eventually got up a few minutes later after Paul Heyman and Lesnar left for the backstage area.
Match No. 3: Randy Orton vs. John Cena for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship
Your winner via pinfall to retain the WWE title: Randy Orton.
During the final moments of the match, The Wyatt Family randomly interfered, allowing Orton to hit the RKO on a distracted Cena to retain the WWE belt. After the match, the Wyatt Family continued the attack on Cena. WWE did right to keep the belt on Orton until possibly switching it over at WrestleMania. This was a competitive match with lots of back-and-forth that escalated during the end.
Match Rating: 3.5/5
Match No. 4: Royal Rumble
Your winner and new No. 1 contender for the WWE World Heavyweight title: Batista.
For those who have been following the WWE as of late, Batista's win should not have come as a complete shock by any means. Instead, this year's Royal Rumble was extremely predictable, which drew a ton of boos from the crowd watching at the Consol Energy Center. With the exception of a few pops for the WWE legends, this was a pretty disappointing Royal Rumble match turnout.
