Brandon Robinson, a junior defensive lineman at South Carolina State University, was shot and killed on Friday, Jan. 24, outside a campus dormitory.
Per CNN's Ralph Ellis and Greg Botelho:
South Carolina State University President Thomas Elzey announced at about 6 p.m. that the student died. He did not identify the victim, but did speak a little about him.
"He was a very nice young man," Elzey said, fighting back tears in a brief statement to reporters. "And it hurts. It hurts us all."
On Jan. 25, the Associated Press reported an arrest was made:
Robinson was shot to death Friday afternoon outside Hugine Suites after arguing with Justin Bernard Singleton, 19, of Charleston, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division said. Singleton was charged with murder and arrested early Saturday at an Orangeburg apartment complex.
Singleton "pulled out a gun and fired at Robinson, hitting him in the neck area," according to an arrest warrant filed by a SLED investigator.
Charles Henderson, one of Robinson's teammates, remembered his friend on Twitter:
R.I.P TO MY BROTHER BRANDON ROBINSON hasnt sunk in all the way but you will always be with is real talk— You Know Who (@charlie_boi54) January 24, 2014
Police were originally on the lookout for at least four suspects connected to the shooting, which happened at around 1:30 p.m. ET outside of the Andrew Hugine Suites Living and Learning community. Campus police were called to the scene, where they found an injured Robinson. He was taken to the hospital, but medical personnel were unable to save him.
The Associated Press' report also provided a statement from SLED spokesman Thomas Berry discussing the investigation on Jan. 25:
SLED spokesman Thom Berry declined to say Saturday whether investigators were continuing to hunt for three other suspects. Detectives were confident Singleton pulled the trigger, he said.
"Our Investigation is still underway and is ongoing," Berry said.
WLTX 19 in Columbia, S.C. snapped a photo of the crime scene:
Eyewitnesses later identified the four suspects that the police are currently tracking, per The Times and Democrat in Orangeburg, S.C.:
"Eyewitnesses at the scene of the incident identified at least four suspects in the shooting. Police immediately began pursuit of the individuals who left campus," the university said in a statement.
The campus was placed on lockdown for a couple of hours after the shooting, but it was lifted only a few hours later.
This is the third shooting this week to take place on a college campus. On Monday, a student was shot and critically injured at Widener University. Then a gunman killed another student at Purdue University on Tuesday.
In a tragic coincidence, Robinson passed away a day before his stepfather's funeral.
He appeared in nine games for the Bulldogs during the 2013 season and made five total tackles. His best performance of the season was against Benedict when he had two solo tackles.
Robinson was 20 years old.
