NFL, NFC North, AFC West, Kansas City Chiefs, Minnesota Vikings, Jared Allen

Wow, what a lame headline. I don’t know why I think of that Subway guy when I hear the name Jared, but hopefully that will all change as I watch Jared Allen punish QBs for the Purple and Gold. The Vikings have been on the other side of blockbuster trades recently (Moss & Culpepper) so it’s weird to see the shoe on the other foot. The bounty was a little steep (#17 & two 3rd rounders), but it’s a nice, bold move for Minnesota (as well as a necessity for Kansas City).

The Vikings generated little-to-no QB pressure last year. They were going to draft a defensive lineman in the draft. Instead of taking a chance on a prospect, wait for them to develop, and hope they pan out, Minnesota went with the present. It would be nicer if they had a QB that was ready to lead a playoff contender, but that’s a whole different story. Jared Allen teams with Kevin & Pat Williams to form one of the best defensive fronts in the league. His main concern is the bottle. If he can keep his nose clean, this should work out well. I tried to avoid it, but here goes. Let’s hope it works out far better than the Herschel Walker deal.

For the Chiefs, it was a no-brainer. They have gotten old. Real old. They needed to inject some youth into their team. Now with their pick they can go after a top tier defensive end to groom to replace Allen. With their second first round pick (if they are wise) they will address their pathetic offensive line. With a couple of extra 3rd round picks they can get some depth in their secondary and their wide receiver corps.

It took a little while to hammer out the details, but I’m glad this deal got done. It adds some excitement to the draft. I wish both teams well. This is a bold move. Let’s hope we have two winners

  1. Ryan have you lost it man? This trade is terrible! The Chiefs give up a superstar in the hopes of filling 2 holes on their roster. They created the 2nd hole by trading Allen. They only way this trade make the Chiefs look good is if they draft well in both picks at 1 and then again at 3. This is like catching the big one and throwing it back to try to catch the big one again along with another big one! Craziness! The Vikings look dumb again if Allen goes back to his partying ways and creates another riverboat controversy. It seems like a lose-lose situation for both teams.

  2. The Chiefs are old, yes. But Jared Allen is 26.

IMO the cornerstone of a good defense is an elite pass-rushing defensive end. The next building blocks, in this order, are a run-stuffing DT, playmaking LB, and an elite DB.

The Chiefs already had the crucial first ingredient, and he was young. To me, this trade doesn't make any sense.

  3. The chiefs absolutly made the right call they now can draft a DE maybe Vernon Gholston or Chris Long with the 5th pick and then still get a good player with pick 17 not to mention they have two extra 3rd round picks as well.As for the Vikings you give up basicly your whole draft to get a player who is one slip up from getting suspended again yea theres a great move for you not to mention its common sense that people with "alcohol" problems which Jared Allen has generally have problems controlling it,and now he is on the team that is best known for the "riverboat scandle" this is trouble waiting to happen. My oppinion is the Vikings just wasted 3 high draft picks for nothing did anyone even notice that Allens 15.5 sacks didnt do a damn thing tp help the Chiefs anyway.15.5 sacks=4 wins is this really worth risking your whole draft to get I for one dont think it is expecially if he slips up and gets suspended for 8-10 games which is what his next offense if it occurs would likely result in.

  4. Hopefully this works for both teams.Allen stays clean and plays well and the chiefs use the extra picks to rebuild with some nice draft picks.

  5. I think the Chiefs did well in the draft and they'll be fine in the long run.
