Despite the fact that the Royal Rumble features 30 Superstars, there are only a few guys each year who can actually be considered a legitimate threat to win the battle royal.
That will be the case again in this year, especially now that WWE has unified the WWE and World heavyweight titles.
Still, many Superstars have made a name for themselves in the Royal Rumble without winning it all. This can be done by eliminating several other men or by staying in the match for a long period of time.
In 1994, Diesel threw out seven competitors, while in 2001, Kane set a record by eliminating more than one-third of the field.
In 1993, Bob Backlund was in the ring for over an hour. Triple H competed for over an hour in 2006. Neither man went on to win the match.
Here, we will take a look at some Superstars who could accomplish one of those feats this year, despite the fact that their eventual elimination from the match is inevitable.
Antonio Cesaro is in the midst of a somewhat stagnant run with Jack Swagger as the Real Americans. They can't seem to get over the hump as a team, even with Zeb Colter in their corner.
Cesaro is one of the best pure athletes in WWE, and it would make a lot of sense to have him enter the match with one of the first few numbers and remain in the ring longer than anyone else.
Cesaro has yet to be confirmed for the Royal Rumble, but if he takes part in the match, it would be a good time for WWE to showcase what he is capable of.
Perhaps that could lead to another singles run for Cesaro.
Xavier Woods has been confirmed for the Royal Rumble match, and he could use it as a way to put himself on the WWE map.
Aligning himself with R-Truth, Woods has been able to frustrate Brodus Clay, leading to the disbanding of Tons of Funk.
Many fans still may not know him, however. Several of his performances have taken place on Main Event or Superstars.
The Royal Rumble could serve as a launching pad to a promising career for Woods.
Damien Sandow seems like he is right on the cusp of breaking into the main event scene.
After winning the Money in the Bank briefcase last summer, he took John Cena to the limit in challenging for the World Heavyweight title. Another strong performance could lead to a big spot at WrestleMania 30.
Sandow would be a great candidate to survive for 45 minutes or more in the match.
The Miz was in the main event of WrestleMania 27—and he won.
Since then, he hasn't done much, and he is starting to become fairly irrelevant. If he isn't involved in a segment for Miz TV, he is on commentary.
What has he done in the ring as of late?
Two years ago, Miz was in the match for over 45 minutes. A repeat performance of that would help put his name back in the mix.
With WrestleMania fast approaching, he needs to make a splash if he wants to be on the card.
Fresh off of a huge victory on Monday Night Raw over Randy Orton, Kofi Kingston could be climbing the WWE ladder again. Of course, we've all heard that before.
If nothing else, Kofi has pulled off some amazing feats of athleticism to stave off elimination.
Watching Kofi do something like that may be expected at this point, and he'll probably do it again this year.
Can Kofi make a deep run in the match and be hanging around at the end? That remains to be seen, but if he can find another unique way to avoid elimination, maybe he'll at least get nominated for a Slammy award.
No, Roman Reigns will not win the 2014 Royal Rumble. But he will have a strong showing while he's in it.
Diesel throwing out seven men in 1994 and Kane tossing out 11 Superstars seven years later was referenced earlier. Reigns will be the man who does that this year.
Don't be surprised to see Reigns throw out one Superstar after another. Also, don't be surprised to see him eliminate one, or both of the other members of The Shield.
The reigning Intercontinental champion is also in a great position to have a good showing in the Royal Rumble match.
Big E Langston has really made a name for himself over the course of the past couple of months, earning convincing wins over Superstars such as Curtis Axel, Fandango and Damien Sandow.
Langston will be tough for anyone to get out of the match, and if he crosses paths with Roman Reigns, we could see some fireworks.
