Cleveland Browns wide receiver Davone Bess' downward spiral continued Jan. 17, as he was reportedly arrested at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Florida for assaulting an officer, according to CBS Miami.
The alleged incident occurred at 6:19 a.m. ET. Per NBC Miami, Bess was booked into Broward County Jail, although it is not yet known if he has been released.
Adam Beasley of The Miami Herald provided more details of the arrest:
Bess was walking down the concourse "acting irrationally," singing, dancing with his pants falling down.— Adam Beasley (@AdamHBeasley) January 17, 2014
When the officer went up to Bess to have him stop, he crushed a cup of coffee on him, and got into a fighting stance.— Adam Beasley (@AdamHBeasley) January 17, 2014
Officer struck him in the leg with his ASP (his baton?), but it had no effect. Bess then took off his shirt, and got in fighting stance.— Adam Beasley (@AdamHBeasley) January 17, 2014
Bess finally complied with the order and was taken into custody. The officer believes he was on drugs at the time of the incident.— Adam Beasley (@AdamHBeasley) January 17, 2014
Officer: "He appeared to be looking through me when I was talking to him."— Adam Beasley (@AdamHBeasley) January 17, 2014
Have clarification. It was a BSO deputy. Apologies for the confusion.— Adam Beasley (@AdamHBeasley) January 17, 2014
Ari Odzer of WTJV in Miami reported that Bess was bonded out of jail Friday morning, and wasn't feeling too talkative:
Eric Kay of CBSSports.com shared Bess' mugshot:
This type of incident obviously reflects poorly on anyone, but the timing is especially bad for Bess.
According to Sporting News, Bess posted a photo of what appeared to be marijuana on Jan. 16:
Bess has since deleted the tweet, but he is very much under fire. It remains to be seen what course of action the NFL will take since NFL spokesman Greg Aiello declined to tell Mike Singer of CBS Sports what the 28-year-old's punishment might be, if any.
The Browns are reportedly reviewing the situation as well, per Mary Kay Cabot of The Plain Dealer.
"The team is aware of the photos and looking further into the situation and will deal with the matter internally," a team spokesman said in a statement.
Bess also posted a photo of himself possibly smoking marijuana in December, as seen in this tweet courtesy of The News-Herald's Matt Skrajner:
The team released a statement on Bess' most recent arrest as well, per Cabot:
#Browns statement on Davone Bess arrest: "The team is aware of the situation and currently working to gather more information.''— Mary Kay Cabot (@MaryKayCabot) January 17, 2014
On the field, Bess disappointed in 2013, which was his first in Cleveland after spending five years with the Miami Dolphins. His campaign ended abruptly, as he missed the final two games due to family issues, via Cabot.
According to Rotoworld, Bess led the league in drops through 14 games, registering 14. That is even more glaring considering he finished the year with just 42 receptions, 362 yards and two touchdowns.
Bess' team, which finished 4-12, is in a state of flux, as it is still searching for a new head coach after firing Rob Chudzinski. Whomever owner Jimmy Haslam settles on for the head coaching job will inevitably have to make a decision regarding Bess' status.
Potential charges stemming from the airport incident could make the decision an easy one, but it remains to be seen what type of trouble Bess could possibly find himself in.
