Lauren Tannehill, the wife of Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill, will probably be checking the back seat twice the next time she returns a rental car.

According to Lisa J. Huriash and Omar Kelly of the South Florida Sun Sentinel, a Broward County police report claims Lauren Tannehill accidentally left an AR-15 rifle in the back seat of a car rented by the couple this month.

The staff at E-Z Rent-A-Car failed to notice the rifle before renting the car out to two subsequent customers. A vacationer eventually found it in the back seat, which had ostensibly folded down since the Tannehills used the car.

Judith Fleissig, 58, of Rochester, N.Y., who found the gun, gave her account of the events to the Sun Sentinel:

We got out of the car, we were kind of freaked out. I didn’t want to touch it. ... I took a picture, zipped it back up and went to the police station. They came out and took it. [I thought] "this vacation is getting better and better."

Fleissig returned the car and turned over the gun to the police department. No wrongdoing has been found at this time by any party. The Tannehills attempted to get back in contact with the rental car company to report the missing item, but they "didn't specify what was in the bag," according to the report. The gun is legally licensed to Ryan Tannehill, and the department seems to be treating this as an honest mistake.

"Though dangerous if it would have landed in the wrong hands, it’s not criminal,” sheriff's spokeswoman Keyla Concepcion said.

SB Nation tweeted a photo of the weapon:

E-Z Rent-A-Car's vice president of business development, Charlie Graham, indicated that all cars are cleaned between customers, noting surprise that an employee did not find the gun, which was in its case and placed inside a bag.

Thankfully, it seems no harm was done. The semiautomatic AR-15 rifle is valued at $2,000. It was originally built for the United States armed forces and has been outlawed in certain states, though it is legal to own in Florida.

The Sun Sentinel report noted that it was unclear whether Tannehill went to retrieve the gun. The second-year quarterback, 25, is coming off a season in which he threw for 3,913 yards and 24 touchdowns against 17 interceptions. Miami finished 2013 with an 8-8 record, a one-game improvement over his first pro campaign.

Lauren Tannehill, 26, is a model. She and Ryan met while at Texas A&M and were married last year.
