With Chelsea on the verge of re-signing Nemanja Matic three years after the Serbian was sold to Benfica, eyes at Stamford Bridge must now turn to what, or whom, is next on the club's agenda.
Sky Sports claims that Matic is expected to complete his West London switch after touching down in London on Tuesday. The deal is estimated at £25 million, with Gael Kakuta going on loan in the opposite direction.
It's Jose Mourinho's latest manoeuvre in reshaping things with the Blues, building on his summer influx of players as he looks to once again usher in a gilded era at the club.
Read on for a breakdown of those rumoured targets who deserve the next priority as acquisitions for the Premier League side.
A rumoured target of Chelsea's for some time now, interest surrounding Saint-Etienne's Kurt Zouma has intensified of late, with the Metro (h/t Mirror's Ben Burrows) quoting the centre-back's agent as saying:
"Some big clubs are interested in signing Kurt. There are some talks with teams from Italy, France and especially England."
The 19-year-old defensive starlet should only be chased if a deal can be secured to sell David Luiz this winter, but providing that could be arranged, Zouma would be a savvy use of the new funds and a £13 million valuation mentioned.
Goal.com's Robin Bairner says that the Ligue 1 prodigy would be well-fitted to the English top flight:
The French Under-21 international is currently serving a 10-match suspension for a horror tackle on Sochaux's Thomas Guerbert in November, but it's a small, irresponsible twist on what has otherwise been an extremely bright start to Zouma's senior career.
Another centre-back option in sight for the Blues is Fabian Schar, a young asset in need of plucking in order to provide better cover at the back for Mourinho.
Chelsea know all too well how talented the Swiss youngster is, considering he starred in both of FC Basel's wins over the West Londoners in the Champions League earlier this term.
Back in November, The Guardian's Paul Doyle hinted that Arsenal, Borussia Dortmund and Inter Milan were all looking into the 22-year-old's services, but Mourinho would be wise to ensure his side weigh in, too.
Schar is still young enough to not warrant a run at the starting XI straight away, but his performances in the Swiss Super League and for the national team have been highly promising. His goal count for Switzerland currently stands at three in five games.
New revelations at St. Mary's could mean that a previously unlikely looking deal for Luke Shaw could get a breath of fresh air this winter.
On Jan. 15, The Telegraph's Jeremy Wilson reported that Nicola Cortese was set to stand down from his position as chairman at Southampton, with Mauricio Pochettino's managerial future alleged to be in doubt as a result.
It was only earlier this week that the Daily Mail (h/t ESPN) claimed that the Blues were considering a £30 million bid for left-back Luke Shaw, a Chelsea fan, in a deal that could now benefit greatly from the news.
The Press Association's Simon Peach does add, however, that the youngster's loyalty isn't in question right now:
Ashley Cole's uncertain future at Stamford Bridge leaves a question mark at left-back, but that conundrum would be swiftly answered if a move for Shaw could be sanctioned. The 18-year-old is quickly rising as one of England's most promising assets.
