Cristiano Ronaldo was named the winner of the 2013 FIFA Ballon d'Or in a glamorous awards ceremony in Zurich on Monday.

The Real Madrid and Portugal forward beat Lionel Messi and Franck Ribery to the prestigious prize and shed a few tears in an emotional acceptance speech.

"I am very happy, it is very difficult to win this award," Ronaldo said. "It is a tremendously emotional moment. All I can say is thank you to everybody that has been involved."

Germany goalkeeper Nadine Angerer won the women's equivalent, while Zlatan Ibrahimovic's acrobatic strike against England won the Puskas Award for best goal.

Earlier in the evening, attendees in Switzerland had seen another legendary player cry after receiving a special award as the legendary Pele was presented with the inaugural Ballon d'Or Prix d'Honneur for his services to the game.
